How to paint a two-level ceiling with two colors?

Choosing paint for the ceiling

  1. Painting experts recommend using water-based and water-dispersed elements for painting plasterboard ceilings. Dispersion paint retains its original appearance and resistance to moisture for a long time. In this it is superior to emulsion paint. However, the latter boasts a wide range of colors. Dispersion paint has only one shade - white, so it will not be possible to create a modern, trendy color option using it. Water-based paints and varnishes dry quickly and do not have a persistent, unpleasant odor. In addition, they are non-toxic and have a durable, uniform film that is easy to renew. This greatly affects the speed of painting work, since there is no need to remove the previous coating.

What paint should I use?

Different types of paint are used to paint the ceiling. Their characteristics and scope of application are determined by the basis. There are water-based coatings (water-based) and coatings based on varnishes, oils and drying oils (oil-based).

Water-based paints are used for painting concrete, plastered and brick surfaces. It dries quickly, has almost no smell, and has good adhesion. You can even wash the tool after water-based emulsion with water, and working with it is not hazardous to health. Among these finishing materials are:

  • Acrylic paints that create a waterproof film and hide cracks up to 1 mm.
  • Silicate paints, characterized by durability and resistance to changes in humidity and temperature.
  • Silicone coatings suitable for damp areas and prevent the development of fungi.
  • Mineral paints containing lime or cement. This coating easily gets dirty, scratched and washed off.

Water-based paints hide minor defects and irregularities, are easy to apply and have a long service life. The use of such materials allows you to achieve excellent results.

Oil compositions and enamels have a low price. The pungent odor, long drying time, low vapor permeability and tendency to cracks make you think about the feasibility of such savings.

Paints are classified into washable and non-washable. To choose what paint to paint the surface of the ceiling, you need to decide whether it will be exposed to moisture and cleaned with household chemicals.

Painting a two-level plasterboard ceiling: technology

The gypsum core of a plasterboard sheet is standard gypsum with polymer additives. When you rub a piece of plaster, you will get dust. Hence a very important rule: painting work should not be carried out on a dusty surface. Therefore, the surface must be primed. Much will depend on the quality of the joint primer and the areas where the gypsum core is exposed.

Many people believe that the appearance of cracks in painted drywall is due to poor quality installation. But this is far from true. One of the reasons for cracking of the plasterboard sheet may be the sealing of poor quality seams. In other words, technology violations lead to this kind of trouble. Let us immediately note that the quality of seam sealing is associated not only with the quality of the raw materials, but also with the experience of the worker performing the work (read: “How to properly make a plasterboard ceiling: secrets of craftsmanship”). In accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, knead the material to seal the seams. Prepare clean water at room temperature. After adding the mixture to it, stir with a mixer until a thick consistency is formed. Having finished working with putty, you can begin to seal the seams.

Along with putty, the seams of the plasterboard surface are treated with additional materials, including serpyanka. This is a protective tape for reinforcing seams. There are two options for sticking it - before you start puttingty on the plasterboard ceiling or after finishing applying the first layer.

When gluing serpyanka, consider the following nuances:

– Serpyanka is glued strictly in the middle of the seam; – When working with fragmentary serpyanka, stick to the overlap method. In this case, the edges should overlap each other; – The contact between the serpyanka and the seam should be as tight as possible; – If you find excess putty on the surface of the drywall, remove it; – It is not recommended to replace serpyanka with finishing type putty, since the latter is not intended for such work. Otherwise, the seam may become cracked (read: “Putty for ceilings for painting”); – After applying the first layer of putty with serpyanka, wait until it dries, and then apply the next layer. Thus, smooth and neat seams are obtained; – It is recommended to use a putty knife to seal joints. The tool should be positioned with its edges on a sheet of drywall.

We putty the plasterboard sheet before painting

Having finished filling the seams and applying serpyanka, you can begin to putty the drywall. Puttying a plasterboard ceiling for painting comes in several options. The method of applying one layer of putty, grouting it and applying the final coating will help you save money. The result is a smooth and beautiful surface. This technology has been used for quite a long time, because it is not only affordable in implementation, but also in terms of financial costs.

Today you can also find three-layer putty. Having completed the initial processing, the plasterboard sheet is sanded, and then a second layer and new grout are applied. Next, fiberglass is glued, which ensures maximum adhesion of finishing materials (about

How to paint it yourself?

To paint the ceiling with your own hands, you do not need to have experience in performing such work. If you follow simple rules, the finish will delight you with its appearance for a long time.

Coloring rules

  • It is necessary to provide good lighting to control the progress of painting.
  • Following the manufacturer's recommendations, you need to observe temperature conditions when painting and avoid drafts.
  • Painting should begin from the corner farthest from the door, that is, from the window. If painting is done in two layers, the first is applied along the window, the final one is applied across, that is, in the direction of the light.
  • To avoid streaks, do not turn the roller over to the other side during the painting process.
  • It is not permissible to interrupt work until the layer is completely applied. Stopping causes the coating to dry out at the joints of the painted and unpainted surface. Uneven areas are very noticeable in good lighting.

To avoid unpainted areas and uneven areas, you need to work quickly. You need to correct defects before the paint hardens. In this case, you can get an excellent painting result.

  • It is necessary to constantly monitor unpainted areas and thickenings and eliminate them before the paint layer dries. It is better to inspect the ceiling from different angles before applying a new portion of paint.
  • If possible, use a new roller for each coat to improve paint quality.

Ceiling preparation

Before painting the ceiling, you need to prepare the surface for painting. To ensure that the paint goes on smoothly and evenly in the future, you must adhere to the following sequence of actions.

  1. First you need to get rid of the old whitewash or paint on the ceiling.
  2. It is necessary to carry out plastering work to seal the seams between the floor slabs and eliminate cracks and irregularities.
  3. The next step is to apply a primer.
  4. The next step is to putty it before painting. You need to be especially careful when choosing materials if you are going to putty a plasterboard ceiling for painting.

  5. Finally, it is necessary to sand the surface with fine-grained sandpaper.

Step-by-step instructions for painting the ceiling with water-based paint

In accordance with the technology of painting the ceiling with water-based paint, it is necessary to perform the work in the following order.

  1. Stir the paint. To avoid the appearance of small lumps, you can filter through gauze folded in several layers.

  2. Place the roller in the paint tray. It is necessary to roll the tool along the ribbed side several times so that it is evenly absorbed.

  3. The first layer must be applied parallel to the window, the second - perpendicular. It is better to move the roller from the wall to the window to be able to evaluate how the paint lays down.

  4. Roll the roller with a 5-10 cm wide overlap onto the previously applied strip of paint. To ensure the necessary force, the angle between the tool handle and the surface to be painted should be no more than 45 degrees.

  5. Carefully paint the junction of the walls and ceiling and the areas behind the heating pipes with a brush.

  6. If after two layers stains and unpainted areas are visible, it is necessary to apply a third. For the previous coat of paint to dry, you need to wait about 12 hours.

Video tutorial

The following video describes the features of painting the ceiling. Following the recommendations from the video tutorial will help you avoid mistakes in your work.

Painting plasterboard ceilings: tools

  • acrylic primer with deep penetration;
  • emulsion in the form of paint;
  • color for water-based composition. A variety of colorful palettes will help give the ceiling any color, and also make the interior unusual and modern in its own way;
  • fur roller with short pile. The long handle will make the tool as comfortable to use as possible. It is not recommended to use a foam roller, which forms bubbles on the surface to be painted;
  • paint brush - will help you reach hard-to-reach areas of the ceiling;
  • special bath;
  • work clothes, as well as a hat - all this will protect the body from dust and paint.

Block painting of the ceiling

Just like walls, there is a huge variety of designs for ceilings. You must be thinking why this approach is included in the list of bedroom ceiling colors and not in the ceiling design.

This is because most people avoid dyeing patterns that interfere with beauty. No matter what pattern you choose, a pop of color can change the overall look of your ceiling.

For example, a brick pattern, paint each alternate brick with a contrasting color of the same shade.

How and how to paint a plasterboard ceiling with your own hands

The finishing of suspended ceiling structures is varied, but painting a plasterboard ceiling is considered the most affordable. A budget option that can be done with your own hands. A wide range of compositions allows you to decorate the surface in any tone that matches the interior of the room. Despite its simplicity, the cladding technique has features that should be paid attention to. A few tips on choosing paint and preparing the surface wouldn't hurt.

What ceiling color should I choose for the bedroom and kitchen?

Here you can fully realize your fantasies. Ceiling structures fit well into the kitchen design, and the right choice of colors can significantly affect your family’s appetite. Food lovers can paint the ceiling blue, light green or light blue. Psychologists say that such paints reduce appetite, so you can easily cope with your diet.

Do you suffer from lack of appetite? In this case, it is recommended to make the ceiling yellow or orange, and also decorate it with beautiful designs, for example, a fruit still life. Thus, even the most modest lunch will seem like a real masterpiece of culinary art. Attention! It is not recommended to make the ceiling too bright if you have small children. Colors can distract children from eating.

Rough or figured ceilings are usually made white or beige. The bumps and grooves already create enough shadow, so using darker shades will make the overlap appear visually heavy.

Perhaps bedrooms are the most conservative type of room. They practically do not use multi-colored ceilings. Considering that the main thing in the bedroom is to relax and unwind, it is recommended to use pleasant pastel colors when painting the ceilings. For example, pale pink, milky white or beige. To create a cozy atmosphere in a bedroom with a high ceiling, it is recommended to paint it in darker shades or even make it black. The latter looks good in bedrooms with a minimalist design.

Is it possible to paint plasterboard ceilings without putty?

In the process of laying gypsum board sheets, seams remain between them; the joints must be sealed. You should also mask the screw heads and then level these areas. Simply sanding a sheathed ceiling for painting will not work, nor will applying a layer of putty without filling the joints - over time, the composition will dry out and fall off. To avoid the formation of defects, serpyanka tape is used to align the seams, which strengthens the composition and reinforces the seam area, preventing deformation and cracking.

Ceilings leveled with putty can be whitewashed, painted, covered with wallpaper or film. After the preparatory work, the surface acquires the desired smoothness, so there will be no problems with decoration.

On a note! The optimal width of the serpyanka tape is 5-10 cm to cover the seam area and adjacent hardware heads.

Every time before planning a future renovation, we are faced with a number of questions that relate to how to decorate an apartment, or rather, walls, ceilings and floors. More recently, a white stretch ceiling was considered the height of exclusiveness. However, today the abundance of ceiling surface technologies gives us a wide palette. But if you have chosen color as an ally, you should know how to choose the color of the ceiling so that it matches perfectly with the rest of the decoration.

Ceiling surface finishing technologies

Give an answer to the question: “What color should I make the ceiling?” It won’t work if you haven’t yet chosen the technology for finishing the ceiling surface. Therefore, a discussion of the palette should begin not with an analysis of this or that ceiling color, but with a consideration of the options that are available for finishing the ceiling.

Among the great variety of ceiling design technologies, the most popular are the following:

  1. Traditional ceilings. The first technology that comes to mind is the traditional ceiling solution. The ceiling is carefully plastered and puttied to obtain a smooth surface for future finishing. Interior paint, whitewash, stucco, wallpaper or decorative plaster can be used as finishing material. If you don’t consider whitewash, you can make a ceiling of almost any shade, because today the range of colored plasters and paints is truly limitless. You can make the ceiling and walls the same color, you can make them contrast with each other, or you can apply drawings and applications to the ceiling.
  2. Dropped ceilings. The next way to decorate the ceiling is to arrange a suspended structure. This technology makes it possible to install a frame on the ceiling, which is subsequently covered with plasterboard sheets. Then everything happens the same as in the first situation: you can decorate the surface with decorative plaster, you can paint it, you can cover it with wallpaper. The main difference between suspended ceilings is that they have an almost ideal surface for finishing.
  3. Modular ceilings. It should be separately recalled about such a variety of ceilings as modular structures, which consist of individual elements that do not require plastering or painting. First of all, we are talking about ceilings made of plastic panels and slatted ceilings. In this case, the color of the ceiling is determined by the palette of ceiling panels. On the one hand, there is no need to bother with coloring the paint, but on the other hand, you may not find the right shade. In addition, colored panels cost a little more than regular white varieties.
  4. Stretch ceiling. The last method of finishing ceilings that needs to be mentioned is the installation of tension fabrics and, of course, primarily polyvinyl chloride ones. This material is presented in a wide range of colors, which make it possible to select almost any combination of wall and ceiling colors. The situation with the color variety of fabric-based panels is a little worse, but here you can choose a more or less suitable shade.

Psychological impact of a colored ceiling

When choosing colored floors, you should take into account the psychological impact of color on the condition of household members. That is why it is so important to think in advance about what color to make the ceiling, because if you make a mistake when choosing a color scheme, then later this overlap will irritate you quite a lot, and perhaps even cause depression.

Let's look at what colors affect a person's well-being and mood. The most common and, of course, traditional color for ceilings is white. This color goes well with any other tones, because it does not attract much attention to itself and is a sign of freshness, novelty and purity. Remember that it is best to use a white ceiling in rooms where the decoration is made in dark colors, as it will make them bright.

If you have chosen a white stretch ceiling, then keep in mind that it is not recommended to install it in rooms with light walls, although it will visually expand the space, but will also cause an association with a hospital ward. When decorating children's and living rooms, you should not use a white tone because it will add excessive severity to the room.

Ceilings are often decided to be decorated in cool colors: blue, purple or light blue. If you choose soft and bed colors, this will visually significantly increase the space, making the ceiling seem higher than it actually is. A blue ceiling helps you relax, so it is appropriate in a bathroom or swimming pool, but it also causes drowsiness and is not suitable for work spaces.

A soft purple ceiling is perfect for a living room, because it develops creativity in people and perfectly stimulates the flow of vital energy. If you don’t know what color to paint the ceiling, then you can opt for blue; such ceilings are best suited for a bedroom, recreation room or nursery, as this color can evoke calm and a peaceful mood.

Brown floors are often chosen for offices because this color creates a feeling of permanence and stability. But brown ceilings at home are rare, since many people associate the shade with old age.

To stimulate mental activity, green, red, yellow and orange ceiling colors are suitable. These tones are perfect for finishing floors in the kitchen, meeting rooms, offices, and children's rooms. It will be useful for you to know that yellow symbolizes joy, orange symbolizes optimism, green symbolizes harmony, pink symbolizes relaxation, and red excites and stimulates.

Choosing a color scheme for the ceiling

We have already said that today you have the opportunity to decorate the ceiling in almost any color scheme. But still, a certain combination of colors will be appropriate only in specific conditions. Therefore, in such a delicate matter as choosing the color of the ceiling, it is recommended to adhere to some rules:

  1. The lower the room, the lighter the ceiling should be, and the darker the floor should be. The shade of the walls is something between these colors, then such an optimal combination of the color of the walls and ceiling will visually increase the height of the room.
  2. In houses with disproportionately high ceilings the situation is reversed. The dark shade makes the ceiling lower, and the room ceases to be perceived as a large well.
  3. In rooms with windows that are constantly in the shade of trees and face west or north, the color scheme of the walls and ceiling should be kept in bright and warm shades. A sunny yellow or orange ceiling will not let you get bored during the cold season, and in conditions of constant lack of natural light you will feel much more comfortable.
  4. The ceiling in rooms facing south can be made “colder”. Make the ceiling bottle green or turquoise, and then the room will be cool even in the July heat.
  5. If you want to decorate the walls and ceiling in the same color scheme, then remember that it is not recommended to use matte colors and shades, as the room will merge together. In this case, it is necessary to use reliefs that visually delimit the space.
  6. If your room has vaulted ceilings, you can paint them in brighter colors, such as green, which makes relaxation more interesting, it symbolizes growth and harmony. If this is a living room, then you can use the purple tones of poets and philosophers.

Well, now you should analyze which ceiling color to choose for a particular room in your house.

Ceiling in the hallway and corridor

The color of the ceiling surface in the hallway is quite important, since it is from this room that all guests usually begin to get acquainted with the apartment. Therefore, when finishing floors in the hallway, it is preferable to use light colors - sky blue, white, beige. A similar color scheme will make the hallway more spacious, and the ceiling itself will not “put pressure” on the incoming guest. Also, a plain light ceiling can be “revitalized” with the help of a pattern, and it doesn’t matter whether it is applied to a stretch panel or painted on the ceiling itself.

Ceiling in the bathroom

When choosing the color of the ceiling for the bathroom, everything is much simpler, since in old houses traditionally they had colored ceilings in these rooms. Of course, the choice of colors depends on the design of the room itself, but the following shades are usually used: blue, blue, pale green or turquoise. All these shades fit perfectly into the most common interior design for a bathroom – “marine”. If you want to decorate your bathroom in other colors, then remember that we still haven’t come up with anything better than a white ceiling, so you can cover the ceiling with white plastic panels.

Ceilings in the kitchen

In the kitchen, the ceiling is an excellent field for experimentation. Also, by adjusting the colors of the ceiling in the kitchen, you can even control your appetite. If you have a predisposition to be overweight, and you want to strictly control your diet, then in the kitchen it is better to keep the ceiling in blue, light green or blue, as these combinations suppress appetite.

If you have problems with appetite, or you do not want to limit yourself in food, you should choose an orange or yellow ceiling. And if you add themed appliqués (vegetables, slices, fruits), then in such a kitchen even the most modest breakfast will be perceived as a huge feast. If you have small children, it is better not to make a multi-colored ceiling in the kitchen, since the large abundance of colors will constantly distract the baby from eating, which can subsequently lead to problems with appetite and malnutrition.

Ceilings in a children's room

Choosing a color scheme for ceilings in a children's room has the same features as choosing a color for a kitchen ceiling, that is, you must take into account the psychological impact of the color scheme on your child. In a children's room, a light ceiling color is preferable. Sky blue, white, beige - these are the colors that should be considered first.

For an easily excitable baby, the ceiling should be decorated in calm colors. If you install a dark blue stretch fabric in the nursery, especially in the shape of constellations, and illuminate it with LEDs, then the baby will fall asleep quickly and sleep peacefully. And so that the ceiling is not boring, it should be decorated with interesting accessories - hanging decorations, stickers, lamps.

But in a schoolchild’s children’s room, you can safely use a brighter palette to decorate the ceiling. Yellow and orange shades will provide an opportunity to increase vitality and give the resident energy. When choosing paint compositions for the ceiling in a nursery, you need to pay attention to their labeling. The best option is when the paint is specially designed for children's institutions and rooms.

Ceiling in the bedroom

Despite the fact that today interior design welcomes the combination of the most daring solutions and different colors in the decoration of ceilings, the bedroom still remains a place where multi-colored ceilings are practically never found. And this, of course, is correct, since the main function of the bedroom is to provide complete rest. Therefore, do not think for a long time about what color to paint the ceiling in the bedroom, but do this:

  • In the bedroom, the ceiling should be monochromatic with an unobtrusive image. It is in this room that fabric ceilings in pastel shades - pale pink, beige, milky white - look great.
  • In order for you to feel comfortable in the bedroom, the ceiling should not be quite high. But if your ceiling is like this, then it is better to opt for using darker tones.
  • For a bedroom, a dark blue “starry sky” ceiling is considered a winning option.

Now you know how to choose the color of the ceiling. This is very important, since the selected shade of the ceiling can not only place all the important accents and emphasize the advantages of the interior, but at the same time improve the well-being of the people in the room, as well as lift their spirits.

Rules for choosing paint for plasterboard ceilings

When choosing what to paint a plasterboard ceiling with, you need to pay attention to the type of room where the finishing was done. For example, a moisture-resistant composition is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, while a water-based composition is suitable for the living room; it is considered the safest and hypoallergenic.

The following types of paints are used for decoration:

  1. Water-based. The budget version of the paint does not require experience during application, can be tinted and consists of water and oil components. Water-based emulsion is not used in rooms with high humidity levels, because it is washed off by steam or drops.
  2. Water-dispersion mixtures. The paint base is not oil and water, but polymers. Therefore, the composition is characterized by increased resistance to water and has a longer service life.
  3. Acrylic composition. Paint with polymers is resistant to moisture and abrasion. The decorated surface retains its shine and color. Additional advantages include the vapor permeability of the mixture.

Advice! For bathrooms, it is recommended to choose latex acrylic paints, which are resistant to water and steam and last a long time without losing their decorative qualities.

  1. Silicone mixture. Ideal for rooms with high humidity levels. Pros - elasticity, long period of preservation of qualities without loss of color, shine, hiding power - silicone paint can close a gap up to 2 mm in width. After decoration, a dirt-repellent layer is formed on the surface.
  2. Silicate. Expensive in price, but extremely high-quality and moisture-resistant compounds have antifungal properties, which is important for rooms with insufficient waterproofing.

Important! If you plan to paint a large area, it is recommended to buy a ready-made color composition - this is required to match the shade. You can buy white paint and colors to immediately mix the required volume - in this case you will have to work quickly so that the mixture does not dry out.

There is no point in saving on mixtures; the composition will work well, but coverage and adhesion may not be enough. As a result, this will lead to peeling of the areas, and you will have to clean and repaint the ceilings again.

On a note! Mixtures based on acrylic and silicone tolerate wet cleaning well without the use of abrasive cleaning agents.

Subtleties of color combinations in the living room

To create coziness and comfort in the apartment, the designers have developed a table that indicates the subtleties of combining the colors of walls, furniture, floors and ceilings in the interior of the living room and other rooms.

An excellent option would be to combine a dark wooden floor with beige walls, a white ceiling and gray furniture. You can use a monochrome design and halftones.

In this case, shades of the same color are combined, only large surfaces are made in the lightest shades, and the furniture is chosen several shades darker.

A living room with dark walls and light floors, ceilings and utensils looks good. It is more difficult to choose a combination of shades that are almost the same from each other. In this case, a good designer will help.

To decorate the living room, you can use a combination of cold and warm colors. When choosing a palette, you need to consider which side the windows are located on.

The north side suggests warm tones and shades, and the south - cold.

Warm colors will make the room comfortable and cozy, improve your mood, but visually reduce the area. With the help of cool tones, you can visually expand the room and create a calming environment in it.

Features of matching shades will help make a small room more spacious, and, on the contrary, turn a large room with high ceilings into a neat and cozy one.

Recommendations from professionals

A novice master will find expert advice useful:

  • in order not to detect unpainted areas after completion of work, layers of the mixture are applied only to a dry base, that is, each coating should be dried before the next application;
  • to identify problem areas, bring a bright lamp to the ceiling - the light will display all plane defects;
  • no matter how many layers are applied, the latter is always laid in the direction of the beam;
  • the dyeing process cannot be interrupted;
  • the first time you need to paint the entire surface at once;
  • You can change the rollers, but only after completely painting the ceiling once;
  • If unpainted areas are detected, the entire surface is decorated; areas cannot be tinted; stripes and stains will remain.

Advice! If you don’t have a roller at home, a wide brush will do. The work will take more time and patience will be required. The movements should be smooth, without pressure, then the layer will be smooth and without transitions.

Painting the ceiling: review of methods, instructions, photo review

To be sure that finishing the ceiling will please the owners of the apartment for many years, it is necessary to fulfill several requirements regarding the process itself.

This applies not only to the selection of high-quality painting material, but also to the choice of tools for painting work. In addition to this, it is also worth considering that you need to have knowledge of how to paint the ceiling correctly.

This can only be done if the work technology is followed.

It is worth noting that whitewashing is the cheapest type of finishing, and it does not matter whether you use chalk or lime.

However, at the same time, it is also very short-lived, so it is absolutely not acceptable to use it to finish the ceiling in a bathroom or kitchen, since constant exposure to moisture and temperature changes will lead to whitewash losing its appearance much faster.

That is why today it is very popular to paint the ceiling with water-based paint, which is more durable.

Technologies for painting walls in two colors

Designers know a dozen ways to make the walls of a room colorful using paints of two shades.

Colored horizontal lines

In the standard version, such division of walls when painted is perceived as decor with panels. The shade border line runs at a height of 1/3 from the floor, which is important for classic and new-fangled stylistic interiors.

But look at the photo of the combined painting of the walls in two colors. You will see that this is far from the only possible solution. The border can be moved to the middle or even pushed under the ceiling. Moldings are used for its decorative design.

Original painting of walls in two colors

If you want to tinker, a striped print may appear on the wall surface. To implement the idea, specific skills and great care will be required. The process is labor-intensive, but satisfying with the results.

Colored inserts

Painting walls in two colors using this technology also imitates panels, but vertical ones. It looks truly luxurious, so the technique is often implemented in glamorous Baroque-type interiors.

Vertical painting imitating panels

Accent wall

A technique of combined wall decor that is very popular these days. The idea is simple to implement, but at the same time allows you to get a creative interior.

The idea of painting walls in two colors is as follows: three of the four surfaces in the room are decorated with one pastel or neutral shade of color, and the fourth stands out against their background with a bright contrast in the living room and kitchen or a calmer, but different tone from the background in the bedroom.

Painting walls in two colors will help you get a creative interior

By using the technology in a slightly different aspect, you can get rid of the flatness of wall surfaces, which will also add creativity to the decor and present the interior from a completely new perspective. For this purpose, only part of the walls receives combined painting. A wide vertical stripe of a different color from the background will appear at the joints of the walls or in their center. This technique is good when you need to hide the shortcomings of the layout or, on the contrary, highlight some of its advantages.

Contrasting painting will eliminate the flatness of wall surfaces

Color accent often serves the purpose of zoning. With its help, areas for relaxation or eating are highlighted, attention is focused on the arch or fireplace, niches and partitions. As the photos show, painting walls in two colors is attractive not only for the decor of living space. The reception is also relevant for corridors with bathrooms. In the first case, in this simple way they get rid of the monotony of the situation, in the second, they allocate a shower or washbasin area.

Highlighting a recreation area using a contrasting color

Combinations of complex shapes

In this case, we will talk about the appearance of repeating figures against the general background of the walls. These can be scatterings of squares or bundles of triangles. The idea is good for decorating children's rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms, decorated in a vintage spirit.

This technique of painting walls in two colors is difficult to implement. To apply an ornamental geometric pattern on the surface, somewhat similar to the pattern on a sweater, you will have to work hard.

An example of applying a graphic pattern to a wall

The process will be step by step. First of all, you will have to paint the walls a base color. The next step will be marking the location of future ornamental elements. This is done on a well-dried surface. Painting tape is glued over the resulting lines, after which the delimited area will need to be painted over with the selected shade. You can search for unconventional options for painting a wall in two colors on the Internet.

Sometimes patterns are complemented by gradient transitions or the decorative finish is enhanced by frames made of molding. The latter are glued strictly along the contours of the figures.

A polka dot wall will make a great impression. The latter can be located on the surface in any order or drawn according to some pattern.

It is not necessary to make peas of the same diameter. Here it is quite acceptable to play on a variety of forms. What you should strictly adhere to is the contrast in painting the walls in two colors. The decor should be bright, clearly visible, not merging or spreading across the base layer.

A polka dot wall will make a great impression

Pea walls will decorate a nursery or kitchen, interpreted in a retro style.

In principle, you can draw whatever you want on the wall. Fantasy patterns, linear ornaments that repeat the shapes of furniture, and drawings with a meaningful plot are also suitable. But if in the first versions it is permissible to use a stencil to implement ideas, then in the latter, painting the walls in two colors will have to be done live, that is, to show your artistic talent. Aren't you scared by the prospect? Then consider that an exclusive interior is already in your pocket.

Linear ornament on the wall

Color gradation

The secret of this technology is that when decorating a room, the walls are painted not with two colors, but with a tint palette of one. Different tone saturations, smoothly transitioning into each other, give the required color gradient.

Gradient wall painting

Usually four shades are used in the work, the most delicate of which greets you in the hallway. As you move deeper into the house, the color saturation increases. The interior solution looks exciting, so don’t rush to dismiss it, but rather look at how impressive such a combined wall painting is in the photo. Surely what you see will inspire you.

How to prepare a room for painting?

If you are wondering how to paint the ceiling, then first you need to remove all the furniture from the room and remove any lighting fixtures that are in it.

If the furniture is too massive or you do not have another free room in which to place it, you need to buy several oilcloths. They can be used to wrap all the furniture that remains in the room, and thereby protect it from contamination.

And also do not forget about the floor and wall covering; cover it with the same film to eliminate the possibility of contamination. Thus, after finishing the work, all you have to do is remove the oilcloths and throw them away. No additional cleaning is required.

Masking tape should only be used if there are areas on the ceiling that cannot be painted. Then you should paste over the borders with masking tape. In addition, it is necessary to paste over the perimeter of all walls at the junction with the ceiling.

Before starting work, you should check whether the electricity has been turned off, since working with devices that are turned on is strictly prohibited. In order to provide additional lighting, battery-powered devices should be used.

It is very important to ensure that there is enough paint in advance. When performing calculations, remember that you need to paint in 2 layers, and besides, paint may also be needed to correct mistakes.

Look at the painting examples provided in the photo below, you will notice that the paint was applied in several layers to achieve the desired effect and color fastness.

Ideas for painted ceilings in the interior

A bright ceiling will serve as an accent or harmoniously support the color scheme of the room. The following ideas will help make the decoration even more original and expressive.

  • When painting, you can create simple geometric patterns or stripes. This will require two or more shades. You can mark the areas to be painted using masking tape.
  • You can paint around the chandelier. A floral or geometric pattern looks unusual, so it will become a real decoration of the room.
  • The ceiling can match the color of the accent wall. This will create the feeling of a canopy. This painting technique visually stretches the space, drawing all attention to the painted area.

Features of painting a plasterboard ceiling

  • Stages of work
  • Paint for plasterboard ceiling

Drywall is one of the most popular materials for ceiling finishing. Both single-level and multi-level structures are created from it. Most often they are painted or covered with wallpaper. You will learn in this article how to properly paint a plasterboard ceiling and what types of paints are used for this.

Ceiling in the hallway and bathroom

This room of the apartment needs to be given special attention, because it is from here that guests begin to get acquainted with your home, and you should feel comfortable when you come home. We recommend using light colors in the hallway, such as sky blue, beige or white. These colors will make the room more spacious and more pleasing to the eye. If you are not limited in funds, you can apply a drawing to the ceiling. It does not matter whether it will be located on the ceiling itself or on a suspended ceiling. We described instructions for installing such a design earlier.

Indoor bathrooms are much simpler. Of course, the choice of color depends on the design of the bathroom, however, most often the ceiling in it is painted turquoise, blue, blue or pale green. These shades always fit into the interior, because in most cases bathrooms are decorated in a “marine” style. Sometimes it is necessary to use white paint on the ceiling. If the surface is uneven, it can be easily hidden behind a plasterboard ceiling, which is covered with colored lining.

Stages of work

If you independently installed a single-level or multi-level plasterboard ceiling, then the final stage of its installation, namely painting, will not cause you any difficulties.

Stage 1. Preparation

In order to prepare the surface for this type of work, use the following materials and tools:

  • grater for sanding (with sandpaper, preferably with a diamond mesh);

  • respirator, safety glasses;
  • brush or broom;
  • primer mixture;
  • container for primer mixture;
  • roller (preferably made of wool, but foam rubber is also possible).

Once you have filled the surface and let it dry thoroughly, give it a good sanding float. The ceiling should become very smooth, only in this case the painting will be of high quality. Be sure to use protective equipment, a mask and goggles: the substances included in the putty mixture are dangerous to the human respiratory system.

After sanding, carefully sweep the surface with a broom or brush. Of course, this will not help remove all the dust from the surface, so the ceiling must be coated with a primer. If this step is neglected, the coloring will be of poor quality, pellets will appear on the surface and it will look sloppy.

Today, construction stores have an extremely wide selection of primers; you can choose any one. Any container will be suitable for primer, as long as the roller fits in it.

Experts recommend using a wool roller at this stage, since the foam roller can slip and unpainted areas will remain on the ceiling. A wool roller will give the surface an even matte finish.

After you have coated the ceiling with primer, you need to give it time to dry completely.

Stage 2. Painting

For this type of work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • dye;
  • rollers of various sizes;
  • a set of brushes;

  • paint tray;
  • masking tape;
  • safety glasses and gloves;
  • ladder.

In order for the ceiling to be painted efficiently, it is necessary to apply at least two layers of paint; sometimes up to five layers of paint are required (if poor-quality putty was used, the drywall was installed incorrectly, or there were grease stains on it).

Paint for plasterboard ceiling

First, let's find out how to paint a plasterboard ceiling.

Plasterboard structures are painted with the following types of paints:

  • alkyd enamel;
  • water-dispersed;
  • water-based.

Do not paint plasterboard ceilings with oil-based paints.

When choosing paint, remember that matte paint will help hide surface defects, while glossy paint will highlight even minor errors.

Water-based paint is the most optimal material for this type of work. It goes on smoothly, is easy to apply, and dries quickly. Before use, it must be diluted according to the instructions on the can.

If you decide to make the ceilings non-white, then add the appropriate color to the paint. Dilute the paint immediately in full in a larger container, otherwise diluting the same shade a second time is unlikely to work.

So, let's look at how to paint a plasterboard ceiling. Let us warn you right away: once you start the process, complete it, otherwise the quality of the coloring will suffer. Do not change the roller during the work process: the pattern on the ceiling will change, which will also look sloppy.

  1. We take paint into the paint tray. It is created in such a way that after the roller is immersed in the paint, it can be rolled over the remaining surface of the container, thereby squeezing it out slightly.
  2. Use a brush to paint the junction of the ceiling and walls.
  3. If there are baguettes, baseboards, or rosettes on the ceiling that can be painted, then go over them with a small brush so that all small bulges and depressions are thoroughly painted.
  4. To avoid staining the mating surfaces, use masking tape.
  5. We paint the main surface of the ceiling with a roller with a long or short handle horizontally (if we paint in two layers) or vertically (if in three layers). To avoid drips, wring out the roller in the paint container.

  6. Before applying the next coat of paint, let the previous one dry completely. Drying is determined by the degree to which dark spots disappear. We apply the second layer of paint vertically (if we paint in two layers) or horizontally (if in three layers). The third layer is applied again vertically.
  7. Use masking tape if you are painting the ceiling in different colors, stick it to the border between color zones.

What color should I paint it?

To make the room look more spacious, the surface of the ceiling should be lighter than the floor, and the shade of the walls should be intermediate between them. The choice of color is determined by personal preferences, the style of the room, and the harmony of color combinations. When painting, it is also important to take into account the characteristics of each room.

  • Light shades (cream, blue, white) are suitable for the corridor. Often the hallway is characterized by insufficient lighting due to the lack of windows. Painting the ceiling in a light color allows you to visually increase the area of the room.
  • When decorating a kitchen, you can paint it in rich colors, which should not be too oppressive and saturated. The paint color for the ceiling can be grass green, coral, or sand shades. It is believed that warm colors help improve appetite, which is important when decorating a kitchen.

The photo shows an example of a painted ceiling in a white kitchen. Bright orange sets the tone of the environment, filling it with warmth and comfort.

  • Pastel shades are used to decorate the bedroom, which helps create a calm, relaxing atmosphere. Painting rich colors should be done with caution in this room.

The color of the ceiling may match the color of one of the walls, as shown in the photo. This helps create an enveloping atmosphere, which is important when arranging a bedroom.

Bright colors are suitable for children's rooms. A combination of several colors will look interesting.

The photo shows how a rich green shade decorates the interior of a nursery. This color is successfully used in room decoration and decor.

Depending on the design style of the living room, painting it in both light colors and rich deep shades would be appropriate.

The cream ceiling in the living room looks fresh and original, as can be seen in the photo. Its tone is different from the walls, echoes the shade of the floor and is in harmony with the decor of the room.

In the bathroom, the ceiling can be made in white, pastel or rich colors. Since bathrooms in most cases have small dimensions, you can choose bright colors only if the walls are not overloaded with decor.

A dark ceiling in the bathroom, combined with a floor in deep shades and walls in soft colors, allows you to create a small space with a cozy, enveloping atmosphere.

With an abundance of such colors in the decoration, it is necessary to properly organize artificial lighting so that the room does not seem too cramped and gloomy.

The photo shows an example of painting the ceiling and walls in the same tone. This finish looks advantageous in rooms of complex shape, since visually there are no lines that break the space.

Matte paint is a great choice in most cases. This material should be used with caution if the color of the ceiling matches the wall. To visually differentiate these surfaces and make the room more spacious, the texture should be different.

A glossy finish helps with this task. Thanks to its ability to reflect light, it visually enlarges the space, however, the gloss reveals all the unevenness on the surface of the ceiling, so before using such a composition it is necessary to carefully prepare the ceiling for painting.

The glossy finish helps reflect light. The walls become visually taller, and the play of textures makes the finish more attractive.

Semi-matte and semi-gloss compositions are compromise options that combine the advantages of both types of paint.

The photo on the right shows the interior of the kitchen-living room with a matte blue ceiling. The rich dark tone echoes the color of the furniture. The pastel color scheme of the walls compensates for the abundance of bright details, making the interior look balanced.

Paint selection

Now construction technologies are improving very quickly and what was new yesterday is now available to the masses of people. Now there are 5-6 paint options:

  • water-based;
  • water-dispersed;
  • silicone;
  • acrylic;
  • acrylic with latex;
  • silicate;
  • enamel.

Good paint for a plasterboard ceiling must meet a number of requirements:

  • good to go to bed, i.e. cover the surface the first time;
  • provide an even coating, i.e. do not form lumps or lumps;
  • be easy to care for, i.e. easy to prepare for painting;
  • affordable and safe, i.e. not be toxic and not harmful to people.

Based on the above parameters, it is necessary to consider all possible types of paints:

  • Water-based. This is the simplest and most common paint for plasterboard ceilings. It is harmless, non-hazardous, dries quickly enough, has no unpleasant odors, and provides an even coating. There is a great opportunity to satisfy any fantasy by mixing dyes at the tinting station and getting your own unique paint color. Such tinting stations are located in every large construction hypermarket. If this is not possible, then using a drill and a stirrer you can dilute the pre-purchased dye of the desired shade into the white base. Cans with leftover paints must be saved. When, after a year, you want to refresh or paint over imperfections, it will be enough to soak the remaining paint in water for a day.

  • Water-dispersed. It differs from water-based paints in its long service life and forms a good, even layer. There is also a drawback - when such paints freeze, they lose their properties, so they need to be stored in a room where the temperature does not fall below 0⁰C. You can tint in the same way as water-based paints. And if you don’t plan to wash the ceiling with a wet rag, then water-based paint is more suitable for the price.

  • Silicone. They contain silicone (in the form of silicone resins), which can be used to hide deep cracks up to 2 mm in drywall, thereby forming a moisture-proof film. This paint is suitable for painting ceilings in a bathroom or kitchen and nothing more. You don’t have to treat the walls and ceiling with anti-fungus and mold products. But it is important not to confuse silicone and siliconized paints; the first is expensive and of higher quality, while the second only contains a certain percentage of silicone resin and is mainly used as a marketing ploy in the fight for buyers.

  • Acrylic. As the name suggests, it consists of acrylic additives. Acrylic paints have the same properties as water-dispersion paints. They can also be diluted with water and tinted in various shades. It should be borne in mind that acrylic paints dry quickly - this is their main advantage. Therefore, these compositions are used for applying drawings and decorations. Even after drying, the paints become darker, while they are resistant to high humidity. Acrylic paint can be easily removed with plain water before it dries. The price of acrylic paint is higher than that of water-dispersion paint.

  • Acrylic paint for plasterboard ceilings with latex. It differs from just acrylic in the presence of latex additives. When painting with such paint, after drying, a latex layer is formed, which hides microcracks underneath. It can be tinted in the same way as water-dispersion paint for plasterboard ceilings. Anyone who chooses this paint can get a glossy or matte ceiling. Latex is a natural material obtained from rubber resins, and therefore expensive. It should be noted that the advantages of latex acrylic paints over others are wear resistance and long service life. The versatility of the material allows it to be used on plasterboard ceilings in any type of room, including children’s bedrooms cared for by parents.

  • Silicate. If the indoor conditions are unfavorable (temperature changes, a lot of ultraviolet light, there is an open source of fire, acid precipitation), and high-quality painting of the plasterboard ceiling is required, the choice must be made in favor of silicate paint. It consists of liquid potassium glass, mineral pigments, and silicon fillers, which ensures the durability of the coating and its hardening. Silicate paint consists of natural pigments of mineral origin. These are mainly oxides of various metals. This paint has anti-corrosion properties. This option is advisable to use for painting ceilings in bathrooms or kitchen areas.

  • Enamel alkyd. When dry, it emphasizes all the unevenness of the ceiling surface due to the fact that a glossy surface is formed, so this paint is used where it is necessary to properly protect the ceiling from moisture or soot. This paint is diluted with solvents. You can apply this paint with a brush, roller or air sprayer. Enamel paints are either water or oil based. A water base is suitable for painting plasterboard ceilings, but an oil base is not. Oil enamel paint is based on technical sunflower oil or other oil of natural origin. Because of this, such paint does not adhere well to the surface of the drywall and painting the ceiling is simply impossible and pointless.

There are no clear answers to the question of what paint to paint a plasterboard ceiling.
But in each case there is a best option, depending on the conditions in the room and the depth of the customer’s wallet. To be more precise, it is better to paint with water-based paint, and where there is moisture, dust, soot, it is necessary to use paints with the addition of silicone or latex. How to paint?

How to paint a plasterboard ceiling? The following painting features must be taken into account:

  • It is important to apply the paint at once, otherwise you will have to roll out the stains for a long time.
  • Do not change the roller while painting the ceiling until the very end.
  • Paint with a roller on one side only.
  • Carefully prepare the surface for painting.

Painting the ceilings begins with the corners, which are carefully treated with a brush, after which we move on to the entire surface. The best option, based on the quality of painting, may be a two-pass scheme. First along, and then across. If the paint has low hiding power, then a scheme with three passes will be useful: along, across and again along.

Plasterboard ceilings are necessary in cases where it is impossible to level a concrete ceiling. Drywall forms a flat, smooth surface of the ceilings; gypsum putty is used at the joints of two gypsum board sheets. First, a gap is cut in the joint at an angle of 45 degrees, then putty is applied with a spatula. After it has dried, using a sanding mesh, we level the surface of the ceiling until it is level with the entire ceiling.

In a bathroom with high humidity, gypsum putty is replaced with cement putty to prevent the seams from falling apart.

After leveling the plasterboard ceiling, the surface is coated with an acrylic primer to improve adhesion.

The next procedure is wallpapering for painting. And it’s better to apply the chosen paint to the wallpaper.

What to paint is determined by your understanding of what you need to get in the end. The surface of the ceiling should be glossy or matte. Whether you make a plasterboard ceiling with your own hands or trust the professionals, it’s up to you to choose which paint to choose – water-based or latex. The best choice is your choice.

Color combination of walls, floor and ceiling

The apartment will become comfortable to live in if the color combination of the floor and walls in the interior is correctly selected.

Looking at the color chart, you will notice the following.

  • The contrast of a dark floor, bright wallpaper and a white matte ceiling can significantly change the height of the room. Furniture in such rooms is installed in pastel shades, in small quantities, so as not to clutter the floor.
  • Using the same color in different tones gives harmony and peace. Mostly cream colors are used. In the classic style, this is the most common palette. It applies to any type of housing.
  • Having chosen the floor color mahogany, wenge or chocolate for a small room, the remaining surfaces should be done in a light, almost white color. Soft colors will optically push back the walls and raise the ceiling. Absolutely white matte painting will make the surrounding volume faceless. It will completely lose its shape.
  • Opposite surfaces attract, giving different sensations. Such tinting can be suitable for any room, depending on what result you want to get in the end. For a high apartment, a dark floor is ideal, the ceiling and cream walls match it. Low rooms will be lifted by a white glossy ceiling and a light floor with rich side planes.
