Why do you need a primer?
A primer is a specialized liquid composition applied to structures before subsequent finishing. The purpose of the primer mixture is to improve adhesion to the final finishing material (varnish, paint, plaster) and reduce the risk of mold and mildew.
The surface must be primed before applying any material: paint, plaster or tiles. This is an important process, if you skip it, you will be disappointed with the result of your work in the near future.
The most popular types of primers are universal. These are specialized mixtures that penetrate deeply into the base and make it stronger. And on the treated surface a polymer film is created that protects against moisture penetration and prevents the formation of fungi and mold.
Externally, primers resemble milk; they have a specific but mild odor. If stored inappropriately, such mixtures quickly lose their beneficial properties, which produces a more pungent and unpleasant odor. Proper storage is in a cool, dark place, in a well-closed container.

Tips and tricks
If all the calculations have been made and the primer has been purchased, it is important to treat the base so that the paint lays smoothly and beautifully, and the coating retains its impeccable appearance for a long time. This problem can be solved by performing the work strictly according to technology, as well as taking into account the recommendations of experienced specialists in this field.
- Primer is applied to the walls from bottom to top.
- Before priming, it is necessary to prepare the base (level it, clean it of dirt, dust, old layers of paint, wash and dry it). Metal surfaces should be free of rust.
Characteristics of the “Nortex” primer
Acrylic primer "Nortex-primer" is used before coating with water-dispersion varnishes and paints. Since the primer is made on a similar base, it forms a colorless coating on the surface and protects the coated material from atmospheric influences.
The acrylic primer lays flat on the surface without forming lumps, craters or folds. For subsequent painting, it is recommended to tint the primer mixture. recommends mixing paints.
Advantages of the “Nortex-primer” primer:
- water-dispersion base, which provides good compatibility with paints and varnishes on a similar basis;
- good adhesion (adhesion) of finishing materials to any treated surface;
- excellent protection against fungus, especially in humid environments;
- strengthening the base of the processed material by filling pores and cracks with a polymer suspension;
- increasing the service life of the paint layer due to strong adhesion to it;
- reducing the consumption of paints and varnishes and preventing their cracking.
Use "Nortex-Grunt" when processing bases made of gypsum, concrete, wood or stone. Work in industrial, residential and office premises is allowed, since the composition has no toxic properties. The acrylic primer is supplied in a form completely ready for use. It is enough to stir well before work and then apply to a clean surface.
Whatever surface is being treated, the mixture is applied with clean brushes or rollers from which the lint does not fall off, otherwise these fragments may go unnoticed and will spoil the appearance in the future.
First make sure that the surface to be treated is dry, free of old whitewash residues, and remove any dirt. Get rid of remaining oil and grease stains with soap or soda solution. Before applying the primer, fill cracks, cavities and seams.

Various acrylic primers - how to choose the most suitable one
There are several types of acrylic mixtures on sale today:
- strengthening primer is designed to glue particles located on the surface of the treated base;
- deep penetration primer has the property of being deeply absorbed into the surface of walls and other foundations, its purpose is to effectively strengthen the foundations;
- special-purpose primers are used to prevent the occurrence of corrosion; they are used during the treatment of bases on which old dyes have been applied.
According to classification, primer compositions can be divided into two categories:
- water soluble. In another way they are called water-dispersive soils. Their application is mainly for the treatment of interior spaces; they are not used for application to building facades, since their characteristics do not include sufficient resistance to adverse weather conditions;
- Organosoluble mixtures have sufficient resistance to adverse factors; they are intended for external finishing work.
Working with Nortex-Grunt
Apply primer using a spray gun or brush. The recommended minimum ambient temperature is plus 5 degrees. If the surface to be treated is very uneven, full of cracks and seams, putty work must first be done, after which two layers of primer are applied. To dry the next layer, an interval of 30 minutes is maintained.
Further processing of the primed surface is carried out no earlier than an hour later, so that the primer dries well. And in cases of low temperature (less than 15 degrees) and high humidity (more than 80 percent), the drying period should be increased to a day. Doors and windows are covered with film so that the primer does not get on them and leave stains.
The primer is tinted using color pastes used with water-dispersion paints. Primer consumption when applying one layer:
- for wood flooring – 90 g/m²;
- for concrete – 120 g/m²;
- for stone or brick – 120 g/m²;
- for plasterboard – 60 g/m².
Store “Nortex-Grunt” in a well-closed container, at a temperature of at least five degrees Celsius and away from heating appliances. Transport the primer in tightly closed containers. The shelf life of the soil is one year.
Proportions for deep penetration primers
This type of soil is widely used for foundations made of different materials: wooden and metal structures, brick or concrete walls, and is particularly suitable for materials with a porous structure. Deep penetration primers have a stronger adhesion effect (compared to the primers described above), which will ensure better adhesion of the finishing material to the surface being treated.
On porous materials (foam concrete, cinder block, chipboard, fiberboard), deep penetration primer is particularly effective. The processing of porous substrates is improved by reducing the required amount of adhesive, plastering and painting material. But in comparison with primary primers, the average consumption rate of the solution is twice as high. The consumption of deep penetration primer is 90-180 g per layer for an area of m2.
Manufacturers always indicate how much soil is needed per 1 m2 on the packaging, but you should understand that neither the norm presented on the packaging nor the proportions mentioned in this article are strict constants. The actual consumption is determined by climatic conditions and the degree of damage to the treated surface (wall, ceiling, floor, etc.).

Calculating paint consumption
Having received information about the working area, look at the label. Branded products usually indicate hiding power and an indicator such as dry residue. Covering power is the ability of a material to cover the color of the base when applied uniformly in a single layer. Dry residue – those substances that will remain on the working surface after the enamel has dried. Usually it allows you to evaluate the content of water and solvents in the paintwork material (paint and varnish material).
We calculate the approximate volume using the following formula:
(Having power/Dry residue)*100
If you need to paint a wall with an area of 15 sq.m., then with a material coverage of 120 g/m2 and a dry residue of 60%, the paint consumption per square meter will be equal to:
(120/60)*100 = 200 g/m2
We get the total consumption: 200*15= 3 kg.
It is also necessary to take into account the density of the composition. For example, the coating density is 1.4 g/cm3. To calculate paint consumption per square meter, divide the mass (3 kg) by the density (1.4 g/cm3) and get 2.1 liters. This means that you will need 2 cans of paint, 1 liter each.
Depending on the type of base surface and the properties of a particular coating, this figure can be +/-20%. For example, to paint a concrete, brick or plaster wall, you will need 10-15% more paint than for wood or metal surfaces. To reduce material consumption, walls can be pre-treated with a primer.

>Primer Nortex primer technical characteristics
Consumption proportions of the main types of primer
There are no standard proportions for soil consumption per 1 m2 as such. There are several factors that invariably affect flow parameters:
- structure and type of surface being processed (wood, metal, concrete, granite, etc.);
- ambient temperature and air humidity level;
- chemical composition of the primer.
Below we will look at a calculation that we hope will help you determine the approximate primer consumption per 1 m2:
Type of primer | Approximate norm | additional characteristics |
Concrete contact | 350 g/m2 | It has a high level of adhesion (cohesion), designed for processing dense surfaces with low absorbent (absorbing) properties. Used before covering the work surface with tiles or plaster. |
Alkyd primer | 120 g/m2 | For processing plasterboard, as well as wooden surfaces, chipboard (chipboard), fiberboard (fibreboard). |
Water-dispersed | 100 g/m2 | Used to prepare the working surface for painting. |
For decorative plaster | 200 g/m2 | During finishing work before plastering. |
Specialist. primer before wallpapering | 120 g/m2 | No |
Universal for metal and wood processing | 120 g/m2 | Used to prepare the surface for enameling. |
Universal type "Optimist" | 130-250 ml/m2 | This is a mixture of several types of specialized primers. Well suited for both metal surfaces and wooden or concrete-stone surfaces. In the instructions for use, as a rule, the proportions for each type of base being processed are written. |
Anti-corrosion / Primer VL-02 | 10 g/m2 / 120 g/m2 | Necessary before painting surfaces made of ferrous metals (iron, cast iron, steel). |
The above standards are not clear standards, but rather indicative. In most cases, true consumption depends on the level of damage to the material being processed. For example, several layers of primer are applied when the surrounding climatic environment quickly affects the deformation and deterioration of the surface being treated.

What determines primer consumption?
The average consumption of the product is always specified in the instructions for the product, but it is calculated for ideal operating conditions, without taking into account individual repair conditions. The primer can be applied to drywall, plaster, concrete, wood and other substrates. Different substrates require the use of different types of primer. The calculation must be carried out taking this into account.
Also, how much primer will be needed per 1 m2 will be influenced by the purpose of the work being done. There are universal and specialized formulations on sale; their consumption will vary. There are several main factors that influence the amount of mixture used:
- Type of base;
- Ingredients and ratio of components specified by the manufacturer;
- The type of paint, glue and other materials that will be used to secure the finish;
- Season and weather conditions.
Different substrates require the use of different types of primer.
What factors influence changes in the proportions of soil consumption rates?
In addition to the above factors, there are other components that need to be taken into account when calculating the amount of primer mixture. You need to pay attention to the following points:
- The structure of the treated surface, if the work is carried out, for example, with an aerated concrete base, then the solution will be applied in larger quantities, because its structure is porous and will absorb more material;
- Type of primer, primer mixtures vary in purpose, and their type will affect consumption;
- The number of layers that will be applied, naturally, two layers will require more primer than one;
- Temperature and humidity indicators in the room where the work is being carried out. It is better to work in a dry and warm room.
