Purpose and technical characteristics of primer-enamel for rust 3 in 1

Tips and recommendations for use

When working with a component such as three-in-one enamel primer, it is recommended to take into account the following series of tips from experts:

  • the best option for applying this substance is a medium-sized roller made of natural material;
  • It is best to apply the primer in several layers, depending on the structure of the wall covering (2-4 layers maximum);
  • when working, you should use not only a respirator, but also a protective suit so that the primer does not get on the skin;
  • this type of soil for work is thoroughly mixed, otherwise full penetration does not occur;
  • These types of primers are produced by many companies, but you should choose those that are in great demand.

Additionally, when working with the composition, you need to take into account a number of tips regarding the procedure for using this substance.

Using enamel primer as a primer

If this composition is used as a regular primer, then no more than two standard layers of coating should be applied. Before work, you need to thoroughly degrease the surface and dry it. In addition, the primer is best applied using a roller, with each layer drying separately. Additionally, it is necessary to carry out all the work in stages.

Use as primer and enamel

In this case, two layers will not be enough, which is why up to 4 separate coatings are applied. It is mandatory to polish after use. In the case of this use case, full layers should be applied, while leaving sufficient time for the composition to completely dry before re-application. In such a situation, it is advisable to spray the last layer from a spray gun.

Types of anti-corrosion protection

Depending on the composition of anti-corrosion additives, dyes are divided into several groups.

Insulating

Minium-based material is used for exterior finishing of surfaces in contact with water. When applied, a durable waterproof coating with high heat-resistant characteristics is formed. The drying period for the enamel is 2-3 hours.

Passivating

Phosphating primer for metal from Krasko.
The dye is designed to slow down the development of corrosion and is used where there is high humidity.

Converter

The product contains orthophosphoric acid, which, when reacting with iron oxide, forms a phosphate film inert to it. This allows not only to protect, but also to partially restore damaged metal.

Phosphating two-component

Primer enamel of this type can be used for the restoration of galvanized surfaces. The material has low consumption and has good adhesion. It contains passivating additives and phosphoric acid.

Tread

The structure of the dye includes dissolved metal particles, which, after drying, form a highly durable metallized coating. Enamel is used for painting boats or piers.

Inhibitory

A sought-after anti-corrosion agent with an original composition formula that gives the damaged layer the properties of a primer. The substance has good adhesion to the surface and dries quickly. Its only drawback is the high paint consumption.

Peculiarities

When using such a primer from the PRESTIGE brand or any other manufacturer, you may encounter a number of features. Let's consider the main nuances when working with paint and varnish materials:

in order to meet the minimum consumption, you need to choose the right tool correctly; when working, it is important to use a respirator, since the composition is highly toxic; Before applying such a coating to the surface, it must be prepared, otherwise the effect will be minimal; this substance hardens quickly only at low humidity, which is why it is necessary to select the appropriate atmosphere; This variety is suitable for use on any surface, but works best directly on metal.

Taking into account a number of these features, it is possible to correctly and rationally use such a substance for structural elements and other surfaces that need appropriate protection.

Purpose and application

This type of paint coating, such as enamel primer for rust 3 in 1, is often used in practice for certain complex tasks. This type of coating has the following main and additional purposes:

  1. Special forces primer enamel for rust is mainly used for treating metal surfaces.
  2. Anti-rust primer is often used in the automotive industry, and also in modern mechanical engineering.
  3. Anti-rust paint can also be used in certain areas of industry, including the food industry.
  4. This coating is used for metal fences and any other outdoor metal structures.
  5. If necessary, this composition can be used to coat other variants of structural elements.

In practice, such a composition can be used for other specific tasks, however, the main properties will not appear, as is the case with painting a car or other metal elements.

Features of materials

3 in 1 rust enamel primers are effective universal paint and varnish materials that can perform several functions. They are used for application to metal surfaces with traces of corrosion without prior priming.

The primer enamels contain special rust converters that eliminate the further spread of corrosion and create a reliable protective layer.

Advantages:

  • quick drying;
  • do not require labor-intensive surface preparation and application of primer;
  • have high adhesion and hiding power;
  • easy to apply.

Modern enamels production technologies make it possible to create paint and varnish coatings without the characteristic unpleasant odor.

Purpose

Primer-enamel 3 in 1 is a universal composition for restoring the appearance of metal structures. This is a metal paint that does not require prior priming and performs the following functions:

  • eliminating pockets of rust on the metal surface and preventing its further spread;
  • coating the product with a primer that promotes better adhesion to paint;
  • painting the surface of the structure with decorative enamel.

Thanks to the combination of functions in primer-enamel, there is no need to apply several layers of different materials to the product and wait for them to dry completely before applying each subsequent one. This significantly saves time and money, and also allows you to reduce the number of working tools.

Most often, primer-enamel is used to cover outdoor structures: gratings, fences, gates, garages, doors and street furniture. This is explained by the fact that primer-enamels are atmospherically resistant to humidity, cold and sun. But it is also possible to use the composition for decorative purposes - for coating various interior items.

It should be noted that primer-enamel is widely used in car repairs, especially its internal parts. Hard-to-reach places where there is constant contact with oil, steam or high temperature can be easily covered with one or several layers of primer-enamel. After this, the car components become resistant to aggressive influences.

In industry, these compounds have also found their place due to their chemical resistance to oils, aggressive environments, water and steam. They are used to cover elements of industrial and building structures, hangars and warehouses.

Primer enamel can be used not only for cast iron, steel and aluminum products. It is often used to coat wooden, concrete, mineral and brick surfaces both indoors and outdoors.

Specifications

Anti-corrosion composition 3 in 1 dissolves in alkyne-modified varnish. The addition of organic additives and target substances is carried out during the production process. After drying the enamel, the coating becomes smooth and durable. It has an anti-corrosion effect and withstands the effects of negative climatic phenomena. In addition, the base becomes resistant to chemicals.

This mixture is an excellent assistant in preparing the surface for painting. The coating created by the 3-in-1 anti-rust composition is durable, has protective functions and, in moderate and cold climates, can not lose them for 8 years. However, this is achieved when the enamel is applied in 2 layers.

The manufacturing technology of the composition allows for a tight fit of the soil layer to the base. In this case, a layer of varnish will be located on the surface. This occurs due to special impurities and additives.

The optimal temperature at which primer-enamel is applied is 20 degrees. If this condition is met, the drying of the composition and its properties will correspond to the manufacturer’s statements. However, if necessary, it can also be used at negative temperatures. After drying, the primer-enamel does not lose its qualities in the temperature range from -45 to +100 degrees, which makes it ideal for outdoor use.

One of the subtypes of the 3 in 1 rust composition is hammer paint. It contains fine metal powder, which gives the base, after application and drying, a textured rough surface and a steely sheen. It seems that the product was processed by blacksmithing. The mixture also combines the functions of enamel and primer.

Applying hammer paint using a sprayer is more difficult than applying paint using a simple sprayer. Usually the work is not complete without a roller or brush. If the surface is located vertically, metal particles may move down, which can spoil the final appearance.

Properties and technical characteristics of primer-enamel for rust 3 in 1

Among the properties of this material are the following:

— triple effect of use (transformation of corrosion products, increased adhesion due to the priming action, formation of a protective and decorative paint coating);

— the ability to apply primer-enamel directly over the rust layer;

— resistance to atmospheric corrosion (weather resistance), water resistance;

— resistance to the aggressive influence of mineral oils, salt water, weak solutions of some alkalis and acids;

— fast curing;

— fairly low consumption of enamel with good hiding power;

— the protective layer can withstand sudden temperature fluctuations, ranging from -45°C to +100°C, without losing the elasticity of the coating;

— painting can be carried out at temperatures down to -10°C;

— ease of application, good painting characteristics, etc.

Primer-enamel for rust 3 in 1 is very convenient to use. Painting is carried out in several ways of applying paints and varnishes: dipping, spraying, roller, brush.

The optimal thickness of a single-layer protective coating (a thickness gauge is used to determine the thickness) is 20 - 25 microns, for two-layer painting - 40 - 50 microns. The number of protective layers is from 1 to 3, depending on the purpose and the desired effect.

Consumption of primer-enamel for a single-layer coating is from 80 to 125 ml/m2. If the viscosity of the composition is increased or before pouring into the spray gun, primer-enamel for rust 3 in 1 is diluted to the required viscosity value using solvent, xylene (or a mixture thereof). The amount of thinner used should not exceed 10% of the total mass of the paint and varnish material.

The drying time of a single-layer protective coating at a temperature of 20°C “to touch” is 30 – 35 minutes, and to hardness level 3 (control is carried out using a non-destructive testing device - a hardness tester) - about 4 hours under the same atmospheric conditions.

The appearance of the coating is a homogeneous continuous film, the degree of gloss is at least 75%.

The service life of the protective coating is:

— when used indoors – at least 10 years;

- when operating in atmospheric conditions, temperate climates - up to 7 years.

Resistance of a coating formed using a 3-in-1 anti-rust primer-enamel to the static effects of a 3% saline solution, oils and water is 7 days.

How to use?

When working with primer enamel of this brand, you must adhere to certain conditions.

Firstly, the ambient temperature should be between +8 and +30 degrees. Secondly, the hygrometer readings should not exceed 80%. Thirdly, the thickness of the rusty layer should not be more than 100 microns.

The Dali application algorithm differs little from the standard scheme for using “3 in 1” primer enamels against rust.

Treatment begins with surface preparation and ends with drying:

  1. The product is washed from dirt, dust, grease, and fuel oil.
  2. Mechanically remove thick layers of rust.
  3. Degrease the area with acetone, white spirit or gasoline.
  4. Apply the first layer of primer enamel.
  5. The coating is dried from 5 minutes to 3 hours.
  6. Check the coating for tack and apply a second layer.
  7. The final drying of the product is carried out for 7 hours.

Before use, the contents of the jar are mixed and, if necessary, slightly diluted with a universal solvent of the same brand. If it is not available, then solvent, xylene or thinner P646/647 are used as an alternative. The maximum proportion of the selected chemical is 10% of the emulsion volume.

Dali can be used over old paintwork if it does not flake off under the influence of the enamel. The test is carried out on a small area with old paint.

When painting, it is important to control the distribution of enamel. There should be no smudges, drops, or clots left on the surface.

One liter of Dali enamel is designed for 12-18 square meters. meters with single-layer painting.

To apply a thin but dense layer of enamel, use a brush, paint roller or spray gun. The painted surface must be dried exclusively under natural conditions at a temperature of about 20 degrees.

What is the difference between primer and enamel for metal 3 in 1?

Primer-enamel for metal 3 in 1 is different in that it does not require performing all these steps step by step, with intermediate drying of the layers. From the name it follows that the drug combines triple activity:

  • neutralizes rust and corrosion products;
  • performs effective priming of the surface;
  • creates weather-resistant decorative enamel.

If we take as an example a modern product such as 3 in 1 enamel paint NOVAX® MULTICOAT ANTICOR GOODHIM, then here we will find another significant advantage: alkyd-urethane varnish is used to create a protective coating. This material is characterized by increased wear resistance, strength, elasticity, in addition, it dries much faster.

Now let's return to our classic metal processing scheme. What will change with the use of the new product? So, we will again need to clean the surface of dirt, old finishes and rust. Everything that crumbles, falls off, is rubbed off and removed with light sanding must be removed.

Now we have a clean part, which is still visibly covered with rust, a thin layer, in places of bends and recesses, pores, etc. Instead of treating the surface with a rust converter and waiting a day, we can begin to apply not even a primer, but a topcoat. Agree, this is a significant difference.

If we remember that a good modern enamel primer for rust 3 in 1 contains a quick-drying alkyd-urethane varnish, then complete processing of the part will take one day, taking into account the preparation of the surface and the application of 2 layers with intermediate drying for 2 - 3 hours. Now let’s compare it with the usual scheme, where a day is spent on preparing the surface, taking into account the operation of the converter, and another two on the work of applying primer and enamel.

Finally, the result is smooth, beautiful, matte or glossy enamel in the bright, rich color you want. The service life of such a coating in an open atmosphere in the Russian climate is at least 5 years. High quality products that are applied according to the instructions can create a layer that will last much longer.

Important! Do not attempt to mix paint, primer and rust converter yourself. This will do nothing except deteriorate the characteristics of the listed products and make them unusable. Such compositions can only be prepared in the factory.

Peculiarities

Primer enamels of this type are universal mixtures. They help update the appearance of metal products. It is not necessary to prime the base before applying paint. The enamel itself can serve as a primer.

The primary task of paint is to stop the spread of rust on treated products and to prevent the formation of new foci of corrosion. In addition, enamel has a decorative function. It can be made in various colors and is used as a finishing coating.

Most often, this composition is used to coat products located outdoors. These can be furniture elements, iron gates, garage boxes and other structures. Primer enamels help prevent the material from being exposed to negative climatic conditions. They can withstand cold weather, heat and high humidity. However, this does not negate the possibility of using the mixture indoors to treat interior elements.

The use of mixtures in the process of car repair has become widespread. This is most relevant when processing its internal components, which are often in contact with liquids such as oil and gasoline, and are also exposed to high temperatures. After covering the elements with enamel one or several times, they become inert to the effects of aggressive environments.

In addition, 3 in 1 primer enamels are widely used in industry. This was also facilitated by their resistance to aggressive conditions.

The use of primer-enamel is possible not only when working with metal surfaces. In addition to cast iron, aluminum and steel, they are perfect for foundations made of brick, concrete and wood.

The versatility of the mixture is achieved thanks to its components. First of all, the base is alkyd-urethane varnish. It includes alkyd resins and urethane additives. Performs a connecting function.

The presence of anti-corrosion materials helps solve two problems at once. The first is to neutralize the rust that has already affected the product. The second is to prevent new sources of corrosion. This occurs due to the formation of a phosphate film on the surface.

In addition, the composition contains enamel. It is with its help that the finishing layer of the painted element is formed. Due to the plasticizer and similar impurities, the working properties of the mixture are significantly improved. The content of the solvent in the base helps maintain the viscosity of the composition.

The primer base and the additives contained in it are constantly being improved. This is due to competition between manufacturers. The color spectrum of the compositions is quite wide, which makes it easier for the consumer to choose.

Features of use

3 primer-enamel to last as long as possible and not be exposed to too much environmental influences, you need to correctly and efficiently apply the paint composition to the surface. It is important to prepare the composition of the mixture and the surface itself for work :

  1. Open the jar with the contents and mix thoroughly so that all components interact with each other as tightly as possible.
  2. Surface preparation consists of cleaning it from dust and dirt. The surface must be well leveled.
  3. Clean the base from old paint, remove all peeling or cracked parts. It is imperative to balance the layer of old material.
  4. First, it is advisable to coat the metal with an oil composition to fill all the mini cracks and unevenness of the base.
  5. Tools and work area are prepared.
  6. The enamel primer is applied using a roller, sprayer, brush or sponge. The main thing is that the layer is uniform.
  7. Application is carried out in two stages: coloring begins with the application of one thin layer, followed by re-painting after an hour.

This type of paint dries very quickly. Enamel for metal does not require specific treatments before painting. Using special sprayers and devices, the procedure can be simplified as much as possible.

The double degree of coloring increases wear resistance and guarantees high-quality operating results.

Advantages and disadvantages

Let's take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of the material that are typical for all manufacturers.

The undeniable advantages of primer-enamel over classical protective coatings (meaning primer GF-021 and enamel PF-115) include the following points:

  1. Surface preparation is greatly simplified when using an anti-corrosion compound. Its application does not require thorough cleaning of rust-affected areas and additional surface treatment with a special modifier, followed by its neutralization with a soda solution. Primer enamel can be applied even to residual rust; it is enough to remove the peeling coating and loose corrosion formations from the surface being treated.
  2. The decorative and protective properties of the material are noticeably higher than those of alkyd coatings. Alkyd-urethane varnish, acting as a binding element, has greater hardness, wear resistance and is less susceptible to moisture and aggressive environments than alkyd varnish used in primers such as GF-021 and enamel PF-115.

To ensure reliable anti-corrosion protection for 5 years, it is necessary to apply one layer of GF type primer and two layers of PF-115 enamel, while enamel primer is sufficient to apply in two layers. When applying three layers, the service life of the decorative protective coating increases to 7 years.

  1. The use of the material can significantly reduce the time required for painting work. It should be recalled here that the GF-021 primer dries within 12 hours, and one layer of PF-15 enamel completely polymerizes in 24 hours. Thus, to obtain a protective coating it will take: 12+24+24=60 hours.

One layer of the composition at an ambient temperature of 20C does not exceed 6 hours, which allows you to completely complete painting work in 12 hours.

  1. All components of the protective coating (rust modifier, primer and enamel) are in one can, which greatly simplifies their application and reduces the number of tools required.

The main, and perhaps the only, disadvantage of primer-enamel is their high cost, however, upon closer examination, this disadvantage also turns out to be quite dubious. The fact is that the estimate for painting work takes into account not only the price of the material. It also takes into account the cost of preparatory work and application of each individual layer.

When using this composition, the preparatory work is significantly simplified, and the protective and decorative coating itself is applied not in three, but in two layers, so the total cost of the work differs slightly.

Consumption per 1 m2

Calculation of paint consumption on the surface must be done before purchasing to save time and money. Standard values are indicated by the manufacturer. Instructions are located on the packaging.

The economy of the composition largely depends on the correct preparation of the base. The opened enamel must be thoroughly mixed and diluted with special solvents or xylene, after which the surface can be prepared for application. To do this, you need to remove dirt and rust from the base, after which you need to thoroughly degrease it. If there is a layer of previous enamel, such as oil or alkyd paint, it should be cleaned. It is prohibited to apply primer-enamel over a nitro-containing coating.

It is recommended to apply enamel primer in 2 layers, taking a break of about an hour. When the composition is applied and dried, it can be coated with any paint and varnish material.

If you follow the application technology, the consumption of the composition will be about 80-100 milliliters per 1 m2. The number of layers depends on the needs and desires of the consumer and can range from 1 to 4.

What is enamel 3 in 1?

Before applying paints and varnishes, any surface must not only be cleaned, but also primed to improve the adhesion of the paint to the metal surface. As a duet of primer and paint for metal surfaces, PF-115 enamel and GF-021 primer are most often used. This is an affordable, popular and simple solution with one significant drawback - before applying PF-115 enamel, you must wait until the primer layer has completely dried. The period for applying the subsequent layer depends on the manufacturer of GF-021, but can even reach a day. This option is not suitable for everyone, so many manufacturers began to produce primer enamels for metal.

3 in 1 enamel is a special anti-corrosion composition that does not require preliminary painting of the surface. This paint performs the functions of three materials at once: a rust converter, a metal primer and paint.

A rust converter is a special chemical compound that is applied to a surface to make the metal more resistant to corrosion.

Primer for metal - improves the adhesion of paint to the metal surface.

Paint not only creates a decorative layer of almost any shade, but also a special film for additional protection of the metal.

How to apply 3 in 1 enamel?

3 in 1 enamel is certainly a unique paint and varnish material that combines the properties of several materials at once. This composition affects not only the quality characteristics, but also the application process.

If you use the classic scheme for painting metal: PF 115 + GF 021, then the operating algorithm will be approximately as follows:

The metal product must be cleaned, dust free and degreased.

In order to prevent premature corrosion, it is worth applying the converter and waiting for it to dry (time depends on the material).

The next stage is priming. For these purposes, the inexpensive primer GF-021 is most often used. It is necessary to wait until this layer has completely dried before applying the decorative and protective topcoat. Primer GF-021 can dry from 4 to 24 hours, depending on the manufacturer of the material.

The final stage is applying enamel to metal, the most economical and affordable option is PF-116. The number of application layers, coverage and ease of use again depend on the manufacturer.

When using 3 in 1 enamel, the speed of work increases significantly, because many steps can be skipped.

The metal product must be cleaned, removed or, at a minimum, peeled off the peelings of previous coatings, remove the loose layer of rust (scale, burnt marks) using a brush or scraper.

Before applying 3 in 1 enamel, the surface must be dust free and degreased.

3-in-1 enamel is applied to the dry and prepared product; the covering power and service life of the material directly depend on the manufacturer of the 3-in-1 enamel.

Analogs

The range of anti-corrosion products that combine the functions of primer and paint is presented not only by the Dali brand. The catalog of paint and varnish products contains worthy analogues that are not inferior in efficiency to Rogneda’s products:

  1. Prestige. The Russian product is produced by a holding company of the same name. Primer enamel Prestige is characterized by a slightly higher consumption than Dali: 125-180 g/sq.m. At the same time, the final drying period differs slightly, it is 6 hours. The price of Prestige enamel is more affordable: a five-liter jar can be bought for 1,400 rubles.
  2. Novbytkhim. The product is supplied to the market from St. Petersburg. The consumption of decorative primer is moderate, but slightly higher than Dali: 80-120 g/sq.m. Products can be processed with Novbytkhim at temperatures down to -10 degrees. The cost of a 3-liter jar ranges around 1,100 rubles, a liter - 300 rubles. All prices are here.
  3. Novax. The brand coincides with the name of the manufacturer of paint and varnish products. Distinctive features of enamel are long final drying (24 hours), as well as reduced product consumption (1 liter per 8-12 square meters). Financial expenses for Novax are less than for Dali: a 3-liter jar costs an average of 1,160 rubles.

Composition and technical characteristics

The 3 in 1 rust composition is fundamentally different from multilayer protective coatings, which require separate application of the primer layer and the coating itself. The ability to provide high-quality anti-corrosion coating in one layer is due to the characteristics of the primer-enamel.

The ability to form strong and wear-resistant anti-corrosion coatings without pre-treatment is endowed with the presence of the following ingredients in their composition:

  • alkyd-urethane varnish.
    This component acts as a binder and is a quick-drying composition of alkyd resin and urethane additives;
  • anti-corrosion components.
    These substances can be divided into two groups: some prevent the appearance of rust, others help neutralize existing corrosion defects using a phosphate film;
  • enamels.
    This component is intended to give the coating high aesthetic properties and weather resistance;
  • plasticizers and other additives.
    With the help of these components, manufacturers of primer enamels impart elasticity and strength to the composition;
  • solvent.
    The solvent included in the composition allows you to obtain the optimal consistency of the mixture. If the composition thickens, you can achieve the required viscosity using a solvent or white spirit.

Interesting.

Each manufacturer of primer enamel may use its own plasticizers and additives, so the technical characteristics of the compositions may vary slightly.

Review of manufacturers

Among Russian-made primer enamels, the products of the following companies are in demand:

  1. “Novbytkhim”. The coloring compositions of this brand have low consumption and have good hiding power. As an example, we can mention a 3in1 rust passivating composition, which is intended for restoring and painting large objects with a complex structure . For dilution, the manufacturer recommends not white spirit, but a solvent of its own brand.
  2. NPO Krasko LLC. Its product range includes glossy protective primer-enamel Polyurethol. The presence of titanium particles in the composition increases the paint's resistance to physical influences.
  3. JSC "Alp Enamel" Among its developments is the quick-drying Severon product, created for cold regions with unstable weather.

Among the European brands we can name the Polish brand Hammerite. The protector paint from this company contains metal particles that give the finished coating a pattern reminiscent of embossing.
