One of the most important questions, the answer to which will determine the correct preparation of estimates, is the following: what is the width and length of a roll of wallpaper and how many meters will it take to cover a room or the entire apartment.

So, let's turn to the standards and find out what the standard width and length of wallpaper may be, the most popular in the construction market. Let's be clear right away: we will not be talking about some exclusive options or handmade materials, but about the most common sizes. So, as for the width of the wallpaper, there are 2 most popular standards:

The so-called “standard” ones, 0.53 meters (53 centimeters) wide.
Wide ones, which are also known as meter ones, are 1.06 meters (106 centimeters) wide.

Of these two types, in Russia, as well as other CIS countries, the first type is more widely used, i.e., half-meter wallpaper. They can have different colors, textures and patterns. As for meter-long wide wallpapers, there has been a noticeable increase in demand for them in recent years. This is easily explained by their numerous advantages, including the speed of gluing a room and a small number of seams. Gluing meter-long wallpaper may be a little more difficult than usual, but this process is actually not that complicated, and the main thing is to follow the instructions and follow the advice of professionals.

At the same time, it is impossible not to mention that some wallpapers offered on the market in Russia and the CIS countries differ in size from those accepted here. Most often, these products are produced at enterprises in Germany, France and Italy. The width of wallpaper of this type can be from 0.6 to 1.4 meters. Lightweight - less than 110 g/m2.
Medium density – 110-140 g/m2.

This is done like this:

First, measure the height of the room and divide the length of the roll by the resulting figure to get the number of strips. So, for a room with a 2.5 m ceiling, four strips can be cut from a standard product 10.05 m long.

Measuring the perimeter of the room

Next, we measure the perimeter of the room without taking into account windows and doors. Dividing the resulting figure by the width of the material, we get the number of stripes we need. For example, if as a result of measuring the walls of a room we get 16 meters, then rounding up we will get 32 strips of 0.53 m each.
The number of rolls is calculated simply: the number of strips for pasting is divided by their number in one roll. In our case we get 8.
Naturally, you need to buy at least 9 pieces, since pasting the areas under the windows and above the door, and for joining will require material. If the room has an irregular shape, then the reserve needs to be made even more!

You can calculate the number of rolls for finishing a room using two schemes – let’s get acquainted with each of them. In both cases, we will take into account the following initial data:

material – paper wallpaper 53x1000 cm;
the room is square with a width of each wall of 3 m and a height of 2.7 m;
in the room there is one window 2x1.5 m and one door 2x1 m.

The first calculation option is if the canvases are not decorated with a pattern and do not require adjustment to each other:

We calculate the area of the wallpaper - multiply the width of the material by its length: 53x1000 cm = 53000 cm or 5.3 sq.m.
We calculate the area of the surface to be designed. First, we sum up the width of all the walls of the room and multiply them by the height: (3 m 3 m 3 m 3 m) x 2.7 m = 32.4 sq.m. Now we determine the total area of the window and door that will not be covered: 1) window: 2x1.5 m = 3 sq.m.; 2) door: 2x1m = 2 sq.m.; 3) total: 3 sq.m. 2 sq.m. = 5 sq.m. Then we subtract the resulting parameter from the area of the walls: 32.4 - 5 = 27.4 sq.m.
We divide the area of the room by the area of the roll: 27.4:5.3 = 5.2 rolls. Round up to 6.

Classification of wallpaper and its sizes

It is worth noting the fact that the material from which the trellises are made is often associated with certain dimensions. This aspect can help in the future to determine the metrics of rolls, knowing the material of the web or vice versa. Let us indicate some rules that apply in production:

5.3 m2 for rolls with generally accepted parameters;
7.95 m2 for those that have half a meter wide wallpaper and a length of 15 m;
25 m2 for canvases with the highest indicators (1.06 m width and 25 m height).

Ceiling height plays an important role in the process of choosing the appropriate number of rolls. A ceiling whose height exceeds 2.5 m requires a large number of canvases, and the amount of residue after repair work will be quite large. Method No. 1

The calculation based on the area value is as follows:

The height and length of each wall intended for pasting is measured, and the area of the entire surface is calculated.
If necessary, the area of window and door openings is subtracted from this value. The resulting value in m2 is the required amount of coverage.

If there is only a small window and a single-leaf door in the room, then their sizes are usually not taken into account in the calculations, leaving the expected surplus “as a reserve”. In the case of a non-standard layout (panoramic window, several or enlarged doorways), the difference can reach up to a whole roll, which means it makes sense to calculate the working surface area as accurately as possible.

Now we determine how many square meters are in each roll of wallpaper. To do this, the length of the tube is multiplied by its width.
It remains to calculate the number of tubes themselves. The working surface area is divided by the square footage of material in one roll and rounded up to a larger whole value.

Example:

The width of the wallpaper is 50 cm (0.50 m), the footage is 15 m.

Room height – 2.7 m, parameters – 4 × 2.8 m, window and door of standard sizes.

4 × 2.7 = 10.8 (m2) – area of one wall.
2.8 × 2.7 = 7.56 (m2) – area of the other wall.
10.8 × 2 + 7.56 × 2 = 21.6 + 15.12 = 36.72 (m2) – total surface area for pasting.
0.50 × 15 = 7.5 (m2) – coatings in one roll.
36.72: 7.5 = 4.8 (round to 5)

Method of gluing wallpaper with a pattern

People often have questions related to gluing canvases that contain drawings. Ordinary canvases do not require any additional actions: the rolls are glued gradually, regardless of the characteristics of the ornament. Canvases with a pattern, in turn, require caution and care when gluing, since the fragments on the wallpaper must eventually coincide and form a pattern.

By the way, the size of the wallpaper roll also plays an important role here. To glue canvases with a pattern, first of all you need to know the step. A step is a gap on a roll through which the pattern is repeated in an identical manner. Knowing the step, you can calculate the additional materials that will be needed when gluing, since during fitting unnecessary fragments (rapports) will be cut off. If the room being renovated is standard in size, then up to three additional rolls will be needed.

It is worth remembering that the frequency of rapport will affect the number of cuts. Therefore, it is worth choosing designs from a certain number of rolls by combining them. In addition, the rolls must be produced from the same batch, since wallpaper from different batches often has different shades.
