Calculation of repairs - how many screws per sheet of drywall will be needed for different types of cladding

Self-tapping screws are reliable and inexpensive fastening devices made from stainless steel or brass and differing in coating, thread, tip shape and purpose. How many self-tapping screws will it take to install a standard sheet of drywall (1.2 x 2.5 meters)? It is not a problem to calculate how much is required, but several parameters will need to be taken into account.

Calculation of the number of screws

What should you consider?

Before you go shopping for screws, it would be good to imagine the plan for the upcoming work and how to implement it. Try answering the following questions for yourself:

  • What is the mounting pitch? You need to screw in the first fastener 5-10 cm from the corner. There should be about 15 cm between the fasteners along the edge of the sheet, and 20-25 cm in the center. Installation is carried out with an average step of 35 cm. This fixation provides a decent service life and a beautiful appearance of the plasterboard structure.
  • How many layers of drywall will there be? If you plan to install more than one, then you need to fasten the screws at different intervals. On the first canvas - after 60, and on the second - after 35 cm.

For single-layer installation, the estimated number of self-tapping screws per unit of gypsum board 3 m² is about 70 pieces. When installing two layers, the consumption will increase to 110 pieces. You can get accurate data using online tools that calculate material consumption. But their effectiveness is questionable, and experience shows that it is necessary to purchase materials with a 15% reserve, since consumption always exceeds the calculated one.
