Polycarbonate sheets are practical and in demand due to their unique chemical composition. This modern building material is both strong and light, resistant to temperature changes, and despite its apparent fragility, it can withstand gusts of strong winds and precipitation. In this article we will tell you how to paint polycarbonate.

Is it possible to paint polycarbonate?

Despite the fact that plastic has a smooth, slippery surface, it lends itself well to painting. However, before the painting process, appropriate thorough preparation of the surface is required. It consists of several stages, which we will describe below.

Polycarbonate is easy to paint, but you should first prepare its surface

Reasons for changing or updating sheet colors may vary:

  • the required color of polycarbonate sheets was not available for sale;
  • reducing the intensity of sunlight in the greenhouse (the plants need more shade, and the greenhouse is too hot);
  • update the appearance of the greenhouse or roofing;
  • To make a dacha plot or suburban house unique, they use artistic painting on the walls of a summer dacha gazebo.

Polycarbonate as a base for painting

Paint for polycarbonate should be selected depending on the desired result. In some cases, temporary painting of this material is required to reduce the illumination of certain areas, while in others it is necessary to hide a small surface defect. In greenhouses covered with this material, there may be excess lighting during a certain period of time. In such cases, you can shade the greenhouse by temporarily painting the surface.

In order to temporarily paint plastic, you need to use paints that are easy to remove if necessary. It is not uncommon for a solution of chalk or clay in water to be used for this. This solution is applied using a spray gun and, if necessary, can be easily washed off with a wet cloth.

In cases where permanent painting is required, the physical properties of the material should be taken into account. Since it has a dense structure and poor adhesion, pre-treatment of the surface will be required.

Types of protective coating

Let's look at the most popular and simplest methods of painting polycarbonate:

  1. Let's start with the simplest and cheapest method of painting, a long-known whitewashing agent - a “chatterbox” of chalk and water. Let’s immediately say that this type of painting will not last long, literally one summer season. Then the whitewash cracks and loses its original appearance. It is quite easy to wash it off - with water pressure from a hose. White circles left on the soil after washing are completely harmless.
  2. Clay mash - mix clay with water. Such a recipe will not require any money at all, but it also serves as a temporary way to create shade.

Both types of whitewash are applied using a spray gun.

To paint polycarbonate evenly, you need to use a spray bottle.

Many summer residents are interested in what is the best way to paint the surface of polycarbonate so that the paint is guaranteed to last for a long period. You can buy similar paint in construction stores. Let's take a closer look at their characteristics:

  1. Lexan paint is better suited for painting polycarbonate than any other paint. Lexan is the same name for polycarbonate in Europe.
  2. PF paint is the most versatile and in high demand. Its advantages are not only an affordable price, but also quick drying. The color palette is also varied. In addition, a durable coating is guaranteed.
  3. Water-based acrylic paints can be used only those on the labels of which the manufacturer indicates that the paint is intended for polycarbonate. The main advantage of acrylic paints is the absence of odor.
  4. Acrylic paints based on chemical solvents are excellent for outdoor use and are durable. Be sure to find an indication in the instructions that this composition can be used for working with polycarbonate and has a high degree of protection from moisture and frost.
  5. A group of aerosol paints for decoration. We'll talk about them a little below.

Polycarbonate can be painted with many types of paints, including aerosol ones.
As you can see, the choice is impressive.
We recommend that you carry out work with any composition of your choice in warm and calm weather, preferably in the morning or evening. It is undesirable to carry out painting at air temperatures below 0 ºС.

Recommendations for choosing CM

To create a coating of the desired shade, polycarbonate paint from Russian and foreign manufacturers is used. In this case, the choice is up to the consumer.

Industrial dyes

For decoration, purchase:

  • PF dye is a material that fits well on any base, including plastic. It dries quickly, has a large selection of colors, and creates a durable coating. The price of the material is affordable: for example, Krafor PF-115 (0.8 kg) cream paint 26030 for 136 rubles, ready for use. If you need to bring it to the desired consistency, then use solvent R-646 (average price 863 rubles) or Nitroenamel NTs-132 white 1.7 kg for 167 rubles;

  • Water-based acrylic should have a recommendation on the container for painting polycarbonate. The composition is non-toxic. For example, Plastik Profi from Bayramix is used in a 9 liter container for 2150 rubles;

  • acrylic based on chemical solvents is used for outdoor work. It forms a coating with a long service life, moisture-repellent and frost-resistant. The container also indicates the purpose for polycarbonate: Acrylic enamel for plastic white R-180 base A 0.9 l for 364 rubles;

Advice: without preliminary priming of the base, the consumption of acrylic compounds increases by 2 times, while this process does not affect the tenacity in any way.

  • clear varnish and colored. Universal acrylic aerosol varnish BeLife ECO (Transparent 190), 350 ml, price 100 rubles. Available in aerosol form and Aerosol acrylic varnish Bosny No. 190 glossy 400 ml, price 140 rubles;
  • Lexan CM for polycarbonate : brands Kyosho, Pactra, Tamiya;
  • car paint, modeling (paint from the Fastrax company - Fastrax Fast Finish Polycarbonate Paint (Orange Power) 150ml for 319 rubles, including paint from the Tamiya brand - for example, X-3 Royal Blue Gloss, Enamel Paint 10 ML. (Royal Blue Gloss ) Tamiya for 130 rubles; marking X-1 is black, X-2 is white, X-5 green and so on) and artistic (Krylon®Premium products) is used for decorating small areas. Most often these are dyes in aerosol cans. They have high adhesion. Users report that the compounds adhere to the plastic, which increases its service life. Drawings are applied with aerosol dye to imitate marble, metallic, mother-of-pearl, and velor textures.

Important: nitro paint does not tolerate exposure to natural phenomena. It peels and flakes off.

CM is applied with a high quality brush, which will avoid streaks on the surface during painting. A working person with an aerosol composition must be protected by personal protective equipment: a respirator and goggles. A high-quality, uniform coating is applied with a spray gun. The work is carried out in the morning or evening so that there is no strong flow of air masses, there is no sign of precipitation, and the air temperature should be above zero.

Dyeing technology

In order for the result of the work to please you and the painting to be durable, before applying the coloring composition you need to spend several days preparing the surface for painting. Let's divide them into stages:

  1. The initial stage is to wash the polycarbonate surface from dust and dirt with a soap solution, rinse with water from a hose, and allow time to dry. If work is carried out in the summer, a couple of hours is enough to dry under the sun. In other cases, a stream of air from an electric pump will help quickly dry the polycarbonate.
  2. Sanding the surface of the plastic with sandpaper (zero grade is suitable). The paint adheres better and more evenly to a rough surface and lasts longer on it.
  3. Next, the polycarbonate sheets are degreased with a special alcohol-based product.
  4. The final preparatory stage is priming. This will help prevent streaks from forming as the paint dries. It is necessary to wait time and allow the primer to dry completely.

    It is extremely important to properly prepare the polycarbonate surface, otherwise the paint will not be applied well.

  5. Painting polycarbonate. We recommend painting large surface areas with a roller. A small amount of paint is poured into a special tray and spread evenly over the surface with a roller.

A regular paint brush can handle small amounts. To paint hard-to-reach places, purchase a special curved brush with a long handle.

How to paint a chrome part black

All existing chrome paint for cars is sold in two variations:

  • funds in the bank;
  • nitro paint pumped into a can.

It may seem that different packages contain the same material, therefore, the method of application should not differ significantly, but there is a difference. To get the desired result, first of all, you need to choose the right product.

The material from a can is more difficult to apply, but the aesthetic similarity to real chrome coatings is much higher. This method of application is used by professionals. PHOTO: tinas-orel.ru

To obtain satisfactory results when working with a cylinder, you must study the instructions. When painting, make slow movements, evenly applying the composition to the surface.

It is important that joints do not form in one place, so you need to process the entire part as a whole, without waiting for one part to dry

Spray paint for metal

When applying black chrome coating, you need to remember one problem - the product dries almost instantly. A situation is possible when, when sprayed, the paint gets onto the base, but does not have time to adhere to the plastic or metal. In this case, after drying, the paint layer can be easily removed with a fingernail.

To prevent this from happening, it is necessary to study the application technology and act strictly according to the points:

  1. Prepare the surface for work, apply a base coat of primer.
  2. Cover the base with a special varnish for polymerization, after which you need to let it dry for 2-3 days.
  3. Additionally, the surface should be polished.
  4. A chrome coating is applied to the resulting gloss. You need to act carefully and slowly, bringing the can at a distance of no more than 10 cm so that the coating has time to “catch” before drying.

After the first layer has dried, it is recommended to apply another one, which will play a protective function.

Painting chrome parts

In order for black chrome paint to lay flat, you need to choose the right tools for applying it. To work, you will need sandpaper, acetone or a special degreaser, clear varnish and chrome powder paint.

Coloring is performed in several stages:

  • using a special tool, the chrome part is removed from the car;
  • the surface is rubbed with sandpaper until matte appears;
  • primer is applied. It is recommended to dry the part for 2-3 days;
  • paint splatters.

The most important task is to thoroughly clean the part before applying paint. Before painting chrome, you need to make sure that there are no traces or old layer left.

Decorating with paint

An unusual design solution is to apply paint to polycarbonate using an aerosol. Previously, decorative paints in spray cans, which were intended for car repair and modeling, were used for decoration. Now, with special aerosol paints on plastic, it is possible to create not only drawings, but also to imitate various textures (velor, marble, mother-of-pearl, metallic). Not only does such decoration look unusual and unique, the composition has good adhesion (sticking), which increases durability.

When working with aerosol paints, be sure to use safety glasses and a respirator.

Types of paints for plastic surfaces, which one to choose, criteria

Automatic watering in a greenhouse: features and types
Paint for plastic is offered for sale in a varied assortment. In order not to get confused and choose the appropriate and most convenient option, you should study all their features. After studying all the information, it will be easy to choose what to paint the plastic with. The most common types will be described below.

There is a wide variety of paint for plastic on sale.

Water-based compounds

Paints and varnishes are suitable for painting plastic products, also called acrylic enamel on water.

Typically, these coloring products are created from two elements:

  • The base is the dye itself;
  • Hardener is a component that makes acrylic enamel for plastic more reliable and resistant to external influences. This component is transparent and odorless.

It helps the paint apply easily, is stable, does not lose its color brightness for a long time, even ultraviolet radiation is not harmful to it, and it looks aesthetically pleasing. When using these paints, priming and other additional work are not required, with the exception of surface contamination. Great look for outdoor use.

Matte soft-touch paints

Things that are often touched by hands should be as pleasant to the touch as possible. This type is an excellent choice for painting telephones, furniture handles, plastic toys, cosmetic bags, and construction tools. In addition to providing a comfortable touch, this dye also muffles sound and light and can give an object an aesthetic appearance.

They are often purchased for painting vehicles due to their wear-resistant properties and the ability to cover vertical planes, and also has the effect of smoothing corners.

Water-based polyurethane-acrylic paints for PVC

This type is used when it is necessary to carry out a large amount of work. They are not matte; more often this water-based plastic paint with polyurethane and acrylic components is used to cover siding, panels, PVC profiles, window frames, etc.

They are distinguished by their quality and stability. The paint is waterproof, indelible, covers the surface with a protective layer, giving the object hardness, elasticity, and is not sticky. Shows good results during application and drying in terms of the absence of sticking of products to each other, the absence of the formation of defects, and the preservation of decorative properties.

PVC itself is actually colorless, which is why it is painted to make it more pleasant to look at. The composition of the coloring material is as follows:

  • Basic acrylic paint of the required color;
  • Thick white or milky liquid, i.e. a hardener that can give either bed tones, or, on the contrary, bright colors (red, yellow, brown, green, anything at all). It is possible to obtain an unusual texture by adding textural elements to the composition that will give the appropriate effect: wood, mirrors, plaster and others.

Aerosol paints for plastic

Many people believe that only professionals can spray paint. In fact, they are very convenient to apply paint; there is a large selection of colors; there is no need to mix the composition. With the aerosol, a person who for the first time decides to paint plastic on his own will feel confident.

These paints in spray cans are produced in two types:

  • The previously mentioned soft-touch, which after complete drying is pleasant to the touch and slightly rough, which allows you to hide some of the shortcomings of the product. It is also an excellent option for adding zest to the interior;
  • Monad enamel, on the contrary, will give gloss to the surface, it will sparkle in the sun, suitable for PVC.

In this variety, it is easy to choose the necessary canister for a specific purpose.

Advantages of aerosols:

  • There is no need to buy brushes, rollers, etc.;
  • Easy to use;
  • The paint composition covers the product with an even and smooth layer;
  • With their help you can reproduce any coating (mirror, metal, wood, etc.);
  • Retains brightness for a long time;
  • Subject to long-term storage;
  • Economical;
  • If you decide to apply it to a different color, it will be easy to paint over it.

The paint composition covers the product with an even and smooth layer.

What paints cannot be used for painting polycarbonate

On the Internet it is often recommended to use hammer enamel to paint polycarbonate. The use of this type will lead to premature destruction and peeling of the paint, as it is intended for work on metal.

In addition, you cannot use paints based on white spirit, since the base softens and the polycarbonate loses its shape and the cells collapse. After painting polycarbonate, if there is a need to change the color or remove old paint, please note that organic solvents cannot be used.

Old paint can only be removed from the surface of polycarbonate mechanically. That is, you will have to pick up the blade and carefully cut it, trying not to damage the surface of the plastic. You can use sandpaper, but do not use coarse sandpaper.

When deciding whether to paint polycarbonate, you should rely on the real need to perform such a procedure. The modern range of products includes models in a wide range of colors and allows you to immediately select the desired shade.
