Characteristics and application of Poxipol cold welding

Peculiarities

Poxipol cold welding is produced by Uruguayan. This is a two-component adhesive based on epoxy resin. It can glue any materials from plastic to metal.

The result is similar to conventional welding, but there is no need to heat the surfaces: when the glue dries, a strong seam is formed that solders the surfaces. After hardening, the seam can be processed using various methods: threading, drilling, grinding. The properties of the product are not affected after treatment. The joint formed with glue will be reliable and durable even without additional pressing or squeezing. To form a seam, it is enough to ensure that the processed parts are still and free of vibration. In order for Poxipol to be ready for use, both of its components must be mixed.

Areas of use

Poxipol is used in restoration work, for gluing, fixing parts and sealing.

In auto repair shops:

  • seal the holes in the fuel tank;
  • repair radiators of cars and motorcycles;
  • restore the boat hull;

The effectiveness of application has also been established in the field of car repair, as a sealant for joints, putty for bumpers and sealing damage.

The glue is also suitable for high-quality sealing of cracks, seams and other joints in rooms with high humidity. Gluing tiles in a pool or making spot repairs to shower stalls will not be a problem.

Composition and release forms

Poxipol is sold in two tubes. In one, epoxy resin with fillers is the main composition of a paste-like consistency. The second tube contains trimethylamine hardener with modifiers and other components. Before gluing the items, the contents of both tubes are mixed. The set includes a spatula, which is convenient for mixing ingredients, and a special plate.

  1. Transparent (red packaging). This is a colorless Poxipol of medium thickness, which is mixed in a disposable container or using a spatula. Is a dielectric.
  2. Matte (blue packaging). A means for gluing metal, the consistency of which resembles a plasticine-like mass that can be kneaded by hand. You can seal holes and other defects. The glue can be white, metallic or gray-brown in color. Quality and characteristics do not depend on color.

The tubes are marked with the designations A and B, each of which has a volume of 7 or 35 ml.

Epoxy adhesive Poxipol is produced in tubes of different volumes (up to 70 ml). The volume usually depends on the type of glue. They also differ in the color of the packaging.

  • Metallic adhesive is sold in a blue pack. Available in small and large packages of 21 g/14 ml and 108 g/70 ml respectively. Used for gluing a wide variety of objects.
  • Transparent glue Poxipol is available in red packaging. There is a blue line in the upper right corner, where it is indicated that the glue is “transparent”. After application and drying, this glue is not visible and this is its important advantage. Available in small 16 g/14 ml and large 82 g/70 ml packages.

Technical characteristics of Poxipol

  • Cold welding creates a seam that is similar in quality to a joint formed by metal welding.
  • The glue is easy to apply, it holds its shape, does not spread, does not form streaks even on vertical surfaces, and does not increase in volume.
  • After drying, it does not dry out or become deformed.
  • It contains no solvents, does not emit a strong odor, and can be used to glue children's toys.
  • In the open air it is not toxic, but the adhesive seam should not be in constant contact with water in open reservoirs, as it can harm their inhabitants.

Description and features of glue

Poxypol epoxy glue. Epoxy is a resin. It consists of oligomers. These are small molecules made up of a chain of identical units. There are also polymers. The number of links in them is not limited. This is why polymer molecules are impressive.

Poxypol two-component glue

The oligomer units in Poxipol are epoxy groups, that is, a linkage of an oxygen atom with 2 carbons, from each of which 2 single bonds extend. The number of such groups is called the epoxy number of a particular oligomer.

Epoxy adhesive Poxipol two-component. Epoxy, rheology modifier and filler are packaged in one tube. It is marked A. The second contains mercaptan resin, tertiary amine and filler. Tube marking - B.

The components of the two tubes are mixed in equal parts before use. It is important to stir until completely homogeneous. The result is white glue, Poxypol transparent or colored. In an hour, the composition, reminiscent of plasticine or mastic, holds together:

  • ceramics
  • metal
  • tree
  • concrete
  • plastic
  • glass
  • rubber

It is not recommended to glue Tiflon, polyethylene and polypropylene. Otherwise, Poxipol is universal. The characteristic also applies to the working environment. The glue hardens even in water or oily environments.

Poxypol is also resistant to moderate effects of acids, including sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. For the first 10 minutes, the two-component adhesive Poxipol remains plastic, making it possible to correct the fit of the parts being fastened.

It takes a day for the glue to completely harden. Afterwards, the connection force is 993 N (newtons). The average shear stress is 2.2 MPa (megapascals). But Poxipol works moderately for tearing. Therefore, glue is not used for objects and surfaces subject to vibration.

Poxipol cannot withstand direct fire, but is not flammable either. The composition can withstand heating up to 120 degrees. Poxipol is also resistant to sub-zero temperatures, being used not only for interior but also exterior work.

Poxypol does not leave stains or streaks on work surfaces. If they stick together, 2 minutes of pressure is recommended. When defects are sealed with Poxipol, a press is not needed.

Flaws

  • Low resistance of the seam to tearing, which does not imply the use of the glued part under conditions of vibration, deformation, or high mechanical load.
  • If the surfaces are prepared incorrectly, the quality of the connection deteriorates.
  • It can damage Teflon, polyethylene, polypropylene, so gluing them is not recommended.
  • Price. The original glue is more expensive than the domestic analogue.
  • Melting at low temperatures.
  • Short life after preparation.
  • Poxypol must be prepared before work.
  • Packaged in small volume packaging. This is inconvenient for large-scale work.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of the composition include the following characteristics:

  1. Versatility. The mixture is used for gluing a wide variety of materials, so it is used to repair almost all household products.
  2. High speed. The adhesive is quick to prepare, easy to apply and dries completely in 1 day, making it suitable for urgent repairs of essential items (for example, plumbing fixtures).
  3. Ease of use. To work with glue, no special tools or skills are required. Everything you need is sold complete with tubes, and even a novice master can perform simple repairs using the composition.
  4. Convenience. The adhesive mixture does not flow, does not change shape or volume when applied, and easily lays on any surface, which makes working with it simple and comfortable.
  5. Possibility of creating several seams in the same place. A new layer of “Poxipol” is freely applied over the hardened one, which makes it possible to correct unevenness and defects without any problems.
  6. Aesthetic qualities. The transparent mixture is practically invisible and leaves no traces after drying. Matte is available in several colors, which makes it possible to choose compositions that are suitable for different surfaces and do not spoil their appearance.
  7. Water resistance. The substance retains all its positive qualities even with regular contact with liquid, which makes it indispensable for repairing pipes, plumbing, containers, tanks, boats and ships.
  8. Duration of operation. The strength and durability of an adhesive seam is practically equal to that of a welded joint.
  9. Resistance to environmental influences. “Poxipol” retains its properties in all weather conditions and is not affected by moisture, temperature and other external factors.
  10. No risk of spreading or drip formation. This makes it convenient to use glue on vertical and inclined surfaces.
  11. Health safety. The product does not contain solvents, therefore in dry form it is safe for humans, which allows it to be used in the repair of residential premises.
  12. Possibility of processing the seam area after hardening. The fastened parts can be freely drilled, cut, sawed, painted, varnished: this does not affect the bonding strength and other characteristics.
  13. Low consumption. “Poxipol” has a moderate viscosity and is not prone to shrinkage, which makes it possible to treat a fairly large surface with 1 tube of the substance.
  14. Solidifies at room temperature. This eliminates the need to use heating sources.
  15. Maintains volume after drying. This feature helps to better control the final layer thickness.
  16. Availability. The adhesive composition of this brand is sold in almost any hardware store.
  17. Simplicity and clarity of instructions for use.

Disadvantages of “Poxipol”:

  1. Low tensile strength. This feature makes the use of glue undesirable when repairing products subject to constant movement, vibration, deformation, and high mechanical loads.
  2. The need to independently prepare the composition. Problems may arise during the mixing process, since measuring the exact proportion of components is quite difficult, and its violation leads to a decrease in the quality of welding.
  3. Incompatibility with some surfaces: Teflon, polyethylene, polypropylene. When in contact with “Poxipol” they are gradually destroyed, so its use for gluing them is excluded.
  4. Low melting point. The composition burns at 120°C, which is sufficient for use at home, but makes the mixture unsuitable for use in industrial conditions.
  5. Toxicity if released into water. The glue is not suitable for repairing aquariums, fish tanks, structures adjacent to natural reservoirs, etc.
  6. Short shelf life after preparation. It is necessary to work quickly with Poxipol, otherwise the mixture will quickly harden and become unsuitable for further use.
  7. Packaged in small packages. It causes inconvenience when carrying out full-scale repairs, when a large amount of adhesive is required.
  8. High price. Glue from an Argentine manufacturer is more expensive than domestic analogues.

When correcting breakdowns of household items, plumbing fixtures, and auto parts, the weaknesses of “Poxipol” do not matter. Therefore, it is considered one of the best compounds for carrying out this type of repair work.

Instructions for use

To ensure good adhesion of the glue to the substrates being treated, they must be carefully prepared for gluing.

  • Remove dirt, debris, wipe off dust.
  • The surface is degreased with soap solution, acetone, alcohol or a degreasing compound. The choice of degreaser depends on the material from which the parts to be glued are made.
  • Before applying Poxipol, the surface must be completely dry, this will ensure better adhesion.
  • If gluing a smooth metal part is intended, such a base must first be rubbed with sandpaper to increase the adhesive characteristics.
  • The wood is pre-treated with antiseptics and fungicides, and porous bases are primed or coated with primers.

Preparation of two-component glue

The resin and hardener must be mixed immediately before gluing.

Do not leave the mixture in the open air for a long time; it will become hard.

  1. Squeeze the required amount of epoxy from a tube marked A onto a flat plate or into a disposable container.
  2. The contents from tube B are added to the extruded resin in a 1:1 ratio.
  3. Both components are mixed with a spatula until smooth.

When the work is completed, the plate is cleaned by scraping off any remaining adhesive. It may come in handy in the future.

Bonding technology

One of the parts needs to be smeared with the composition and pressed firmly against the other. For the initial contraction to occur, wait 1-2 minutes. The position of the bases can be adjusted within 5-10 minutes. Operation is possible no earlier than in 24 hours.

Recommendations

  • You can seal joints, holes, and cracks with a small construction spatula or a knife moistened with cool water to smooth out the glue.
  • If it is intended to repair leaks in containers, tanks, tanks, cold welding is applied with a spatula. A slightly thickened glue or opaque plasticine-like composition is used, which is glued to the leaking area.
  • To make the seam more resistant to mechanical stress or vibration, a little steel filings are added to it.
  • Optimal operating temperature is +18…+20 °C. With this mode, the seam dries evenly.
  • Before applying the second layer (if necessary), you must wait until the first one has completely hardened.

Store remaining glue in a dark place out of reach of children.

The tubes with components are tightly closed, and their caps are screwed in the correct order.

If the resin in tube A has hardened a little, before use it is kept in hot water or on a warm radiator.

How to use Poxipol

The glue retains its positive qualities only when used correctly. Therefore, before starting to work with this product, you need to carefully study the instructions, which contain all the details of how to use Poxipol.

Safety precautions

If it comes into contact with the skin and mucous membranes, the substance can cause harm to health, cause irritation or an allergic reaction.

To prevent this, the following safety rules must be observed:

  • all work with “Poxipol” is carried out wearing protective glasses, a mask and a respirator;
  • gluing is performed in a well-ventilated area;
  • if glue gets on the skin, immediately treat the affected area with an abrasive sponge, then wash thoroughly with soap and water until traces of the substance are completely removed;
  • cold welding is not used to repair gas equipment;
  • avoid contact with glued surfaces for 10 minutes after finishing work;
  • the tubes are stored tightly closed in the original factory packaging, out of the reach of children and pets;
  • expired materials are not used;
  • upon completion of work, wash hands with soapy water, even if the substance does not come into contact with the skin;
  • If Poxipol is swallowed or gets into your eyes, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Dried glue is safe for humans and animals. No precautions are required when contacting it.

The use of gloves is recommended.

Making the mixture

Prepare the adhesive composition immediately before use. If you make the mixture in advance, it will quickly harden and lose its properties.

Instructions for preparing glue:

  1. Squeeze the required amount of mixture from tube A onto the plate included in the kit or other suitable surface.
  2. Add the same amount of substance from bottle B. The 1:1 proportion must be carefully observed, otherwise the glue will turn out to be of poor quality and unsuitable for work.
  3. Mix the ingredients until smooth. After use, clean the plate by scraping off any remaining adhesive.

When preparing glue, it is better to use the plate and spatula that come with the tubes. They are made from special substances to which Poxipol residues do not stick. When using third-party tools and containers, they will have to be cleaned for a long time or thrown away after use.

Prepare the mixture for gluing.

General application technology

Cold welding is quite easy to use.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Remove dirt from the parts to be glued. Degrease them with soapy water, acetone or alcohol.
  2. Dry surfaces to increase adhesion and bond strength. Smooth materials should be treated with sandpaper before work to improve adhesion.
  3. Apply the prepared mixture to 1 of the parts to be joined. Press firmly and hold firmly with your hands or press down with a weight for at least 2 minutes so that the glue sets.
  4. Wait until “Poxipol” dries completely, and then start using the product.

The adhesive composition should be used within the first 5-6 minutes after preparation. Therefore, all procedures with surfaces (cleaning, degreasing, etc.) are carried out in advance, before starting work.

Drying time

“Poxipol” dries in 3 stages:

  1. It takes 1-2 minutes for the glue to initially set. This time is used to adjust the position of the parts being glued relative to each other without losing the properties of the composition.
  2. It takes 10 minutes for the seam to harden. At this time, the glue retains its plasticity, which is used to level the surface and hide defects.
  3. Complete drying takes from 12 hours to 1 day. After this period, the product can be used.

The hardening time of cold welding is the same for any type of surface.

Helpful operating tips

Recommendations for the use of “Poxipol”:

  1. To fill cracks, holes and holes in metal products, an opaque adhesive composition is used. It is applied with a spatula or knife soaked in cold water: this makes leveling the surface easier.
  2. When repairing products of complex shape, use opaque glue with the consistency of plasticine. It is taken with your hands and applied to the site of damage, after which the shape is corrected with your fingers.
  3. If “Poxipol” is used to repair parts that are subject to frequent mechanical stress, a little steel filings are added to it. This makes the seam more resistant to vibrations and vibrations.
  4. When you need to apply several layers of glue to a surface, you need to wait for each of them to dry completely before preparing the next one. The optimal layer thickness is 6 mm.
  5. It is best to work with the mixture at a temperature of +18…+22°C. This way it hardens most evenly.
  6. If the substance in the tubes has hardened and is difficult to squeeze out, you should hold it on a radiator or in warm water before working.
  7. When using “Poxipol” on wood, its surface is pre-treated with compounds against mold and fungi. This increases the durability of wooden parts and prevents the appearance of harmful microorganisms.
  8. When processing parts made of smooth materials (for example, glass), it is worth pre-lubricating them with contact glue to give them a slight roughness. This will improve the adhesion of the resin to the surface and increase the strength of the seam.
