Properties, advantages and recommendations for applying paint BT-177

Purpose of the material

Silver enamel BT-177 is a suspension in consistency and includes bitumen-based varnish and aluminum powder. It is best to work with silver on metal - the paint helps prevent rust from appearing on the surface. The product can also be applied to products made from other materials - wood, plastic, concrete.

The product is widely used for external and internal work. It has excellent fire-resistant properties, therefore it is used for coating furnaces, boilers, and other products and structures made of ferrous and non-ferrous metals that have to be operated at elevated temperatures. Due to the presence of aluminum, paint cannot be used in children's rooms, hospitals and other premises that have high safety requirements.

Material used for painting:

  • country equipment;
  • car rims;
  • pipes;
  • gate;
  • profile fences;
  • columns

Do not use the product when surfaces are heated above +90 degrees. Not used for painting water storage containers, not applied to oil, oil-bitumen, alkyd coatings, or nitro enamels.

Advantages of the material

Initially, manufacturers produced the only silver paint option. Now the palette is complemented by shades of gold, copper and bronze. This allows you to improve the aesthetic properties of the product and give surfaces a more beautiful appearance.

Also, the positive properties of BT-177 include:

  • waterproof, which not only improves the protective characteristics, but also allows you to wash surfaces using detergents, cleaning agents and abrasives
  • protection from external influences of both natural and mechanical origin
  • resistance to weather changes
  • high drying speed
  • stopping corrosion phenomena and preventing the emergence of new foci
  • no crumbling and abrasion resistance
  • long service life - updating will be required no earlier than after 3 years

Benefits of paint

Previously, silver was produced in one color, corresponding to the name. Other shades are now being produced: gold, bronze, copper paint is on sale, and additional dyes are added to them. Thanks to this variety, the product gives excellent decorative qualities to products, and the appearance of surfaces is significantly improved.

Other advantages of the material:

  • protection from damaging factors, including natural ones;
  • resistance to weather changes;

Bt 177 paint. main characteristics and properties of the material

PAINT “Serebryanka” BT-177 (GOST 5631-79) is used for painting structures and products used outside in atmospheric conditions.

Main characteristics and properties of the material

BT 177 is a paint (enamel), which consists of two main components: BT-577 varnish and aluminum powder. They are mixed before use. This paint is a material that is quite resistant to atmospheric influences.

It can be applied to a primed surface or without pre-treatment.

The paint has excellent adhesion to metal; when dried, it is possible to obtain a shiny, mirror-like, elastic, temperature-resistant coating that can withstand temperatures of 200 C; among other things, it perfectly protects against rust, high air humidity and the action of solutions of complex substances contained in water onto a painted surface. BT 177 is a paint that is applied with a brush, roller or sprayed onto the product. Drying of paint occurs both under natural conditions and through the use of hot drying.

After the paint dries, the surface acquires a silver color with a smooth structure, without any wrinkles or pockmarks.

Solvent

If necessary, these paints and varnishes are diluted with white spirit, solvent, turpentine, or a mixture of them in the required ratio (1:1).

Applying paint to the product

The product should be prepared before applying paint. If it has been previously painted, it should be cleaned and dried. Only after completing these steps can you paint the surface using a roller, brush or spray method.

These paints and varnishes are applied in one or two layers; the air temperature during paint application can vary from +5 to +35C and humidity is a maximum of 80%.

When using paint at low temperatures, it should be noted that the temperature of the material must be at least +15C.

How much paint does it take to make one layer?

For a surface to be painted measuring 1 sq. m. you will need from 110 to 130 grams. The actual consumption, as a rule, depends on how well the surface to be painted is prepared, what painting method is used and what is the professionalism of the personnel.

One layer of paint is 20-25 microns thick and depends on the painting method and the qualifications of the personnel.

How to dry a painted product?

The drying time of the paint at an air temperature of 20-22C is 15-16 hours; at a temperature of 100-110 C, the paint is dried for 30 minutes, the coating should first be kept for 30 minutes at room temperature. After hot drying, before use, the painted coating should be exposed to air for at least 3 hours at a temperature of 18-22 °C.

Coating service life

If all requirements for surface preparation, paint application (primer layer and 2 layers of paint), as well as drying of the painted product are met, the coating can be used for up to 2.5 years in a temperate climate.

Main technical characteristics

BT 177 paint has the following characteristics:

  • Drying at a temperature of 20-22°C to the third degree takes no more than 16 hours.
  • At air temperatures from 100 to 110°C – no more than 30 minutes.
  • The elasticity of the film when bending is no more than 1 mm.
  • Undried film has a covering power of no more than 30 g/m2.

Recommended paint scheme

Metal products are painted with BT 177 paint, the characteristics of which are indicated above, as follows:

  • 1 layer – primer (eg GF) on a rusty Unicor surface, or using one layer of a corrosion converter;
  • Layer 2 – one (or two) layer of this type of paint.

If there is no primer, you can simply apply two coats of paint.

How should it be stored properly?

The paint components (varnish and duralumin powder) will be stored in a hermetically sealed container, protected from moisture, exposure to temperature influences (direct rays of the sun and heat) at air temperatures from minus 40C to plus 40C.

In what container is it produced?

The varnish that makes up the paint is sold in cans or industrial containers; aluminum powder - in drums. Packages can be large, holding 15, 25, 57 kg, or small, weighing from 0.8 to 2.8 kg.

Shelf life specified by the manufacturer

The guaranteed shelf life of varnish from the date of manufacture is six months, and aluminum powder is stored for one year from the date of manufacture.

Mode of application

Before using the paint, the composition must be thoroughly mixed. Next, the working viscosity is checked, and if necessary, solvents are added (it is best to dilute thickened paint with a solvent). The amount of solvent is no more than 1:1 by weight.

Before application make sure the surface is completely dry. Methods of pneumatic spraying, roller and brush application are used. Number of layers - 1 - 2, no more. It is important to consider the recommended temperature, humidity no more than 80%. The temperature of the base itself must be at least +15 degrees.

The surface must be dried for at least 16 hours; only after this the product can be used. If possible, heat dry for 30 minutes, then leave the coating for another 3 hours at room temperature.

Recommendations for use

BT varnish can be used either in combination with aluminum powder or independently, and for treating metal surfaces as a moisture-proof coating. When diluting the composition, it is recommended to use small portions of powder. The varnish consists of organic solvents and resins that speed up the drying process.

Before adding silver powder, the BT varnish has a black or dark brown semi-matte tint. This substance is flammable and fire hazardous, so it is recommended to store it out of the reach of children and open flames.

Like the components of bitumen paint, the finished mixture is stored and transported at room temperature (not higher than 30 degrees). If this norm is exceeded, the ready-to-use solution begins to dry out, and the varnish emits harmful toxic fumes. To avoid counterfeits and purchasing expired goods (the average shelf life of paint is from 6 to 18 months), you can ask the seller for a quality certificate of conformity.

When working with such products, you need to wear a mask (respirator) in a well-ventilated area.

Since aluminum belongs to the category of metals harmful to the body, which tends to accumulate in cells and cause systemic disorders and oncology, it is prohibited to use silver to paint containers for storing water and food products.

It is strictly forbidden to throw remnants of BT 117 paint or its components onto the street, bury them in the soil, or wash them into sewers or open water resources. This kind of waste must be disposed of in accordance with the requirements for the removal of household and construction waste.

Safety regulations

Serebryanka is not dangerous in terms of explosions, but it is fire hazardous, since it contains a flammable component. When storing it, it should be located away from sources of heat, fire, sunlight, and the container should be tightly closed. While working, you should wear rubber gloves and protect your respiratory tract with a respirator. Work indoors is carried out only with good ventilation. The room should be ventilated after finishing work.

Aluminum can cause cancer and chronic diseases, so paint should not be allowed to come into contact with dishes or food. Residues of material must not be buried, thrown away with household waste, or poured down the drain: they are disposed of in accordance with the rules for the removal of construction waste.

Work process

Before you start staining, you need to properly prepare the silverware. To do this, mix both components in the recommended proportions, achieving uniformity of the composition, and then add a solvent. The amount of the latter should not exceed the amount of coloring agent.

For hardened paints it is better to use a solvent.

Paint can only be applied to a completely dry surface with a temperature of +15°.

Humidity levels should not be higher than 80%.

A roller, brush or spray gun is suitable as a working tool.

Application of more than two layers of dye is not allowed.

The paint takes 16 hours to dry.

If it is possible to use hot drying, it takes 0.5 hours + 180 minutes for final drying at room temperature.

Main advantages

Previously, BT-177 paint was produced in only one color - silver. And today they produce several shades of it: bronze, golden and copper. To color the composition in these colors, special pigment substances are added to the mixture, thanks to which it is possible to increase the decorative properties of products and structures, improve their appearance, and make them more attractive. In addition, this paint has the following advantages:

  • reliably protects the surface from adverse factors, including high humidity, temperature changes, ultraviolet rays, and others;
  • resistant to weather vagaries;
  • protects the material from rust and corrosion, protects wood from rotting, stops many harmful processes;
  • dries quite quickly;
  • has a long service life.

After painting with BT-177 paint, the material acquires water-repellent characteristics, making it much easier to care for the product. After the silver or bronze paint has dried, the surface can be washed with cleaning and washing chemicals, abrasives, the painted layer does not begin to crumble or crack under mechanical stress. The painted surface retains its attractive appearance for 3 years, after which the material must be tinted.

Purpose and use

PF-115 is a universal paint, thanks to which the composition can be used for painting:

  • wood;
  • concrete structures;
  • cement plasters;
  • bricks;
  • stone;
  • metal

Enamel should be applied only when the temperature range is from +5 to +35°C. Its use for painting hot heating radiators and other warm communications is unacceptable. In this case, an unnaturally rapid evaporation of volatile substances occurs, and as a result, accelerated drying is observed. Such a layer does not gain sufficient binding properties. Surfaces painted under such conditions are prone to cracking, loss of color and flakes.

An example of proper painting of a cold heating radiator with PF-115 enamel

Enamel is ideal for interior work, as well as for painting outdoor surfaces that are in the shade or not heated. Paint can be used as the only means of protection and decoration, and such paint can be applied to a special primer, antiseptic impregnation and rust converters.

When using PF-115 on hygroscopic surfaces that will be in an important environment, the use of antibacterial and antiseptic additives is required. The paint itself does not have such properties.

Dried enamel-painted surfaces can be used in various thermal conditions from -50 to +60°C. To ensure such stability, the paint must be applied in several layers. Single-layer application is allowed only if old coatings are renewed without cracks or blisters. Even with multi-layer application, the composition retains its elasticity.

Scope of application

The technical characteristics of silver paint BT 177 allow it to be used for both interior and exterior finishing work. It has good fire-resistant properties, so it is often used to paint over defects on boilers, stoves and other household utensils that are often exposed to high temperatures. But due to the fact that BT varnish, like aluminum chips, are not considered the most environmentally friendly components, such paint should not be used in a children's room.

BT silver paint has become widespread due to its high resistance to the influence of a humid environment, and it practically does not fade in direct sunlight. Thus, it is advisable to use it for painting external communications (pipes, columns), wickets and gates. It can be used to paint garden equipment, car rims, etc.

BT paint prolongs the life of metal products and gives them a noble, natural shade of silver. In addition, moisture-repellent properties make it easier to care for the painted surface. The paint is not afraid of exposure to abrasive or soapy cleaning compounds, and will not peel off during prolonged friction.

On average, silver remains in good appearance for two to three years, after which the coating needs to be renewed.

Correct painting technology

Each package containing BT varnish or aluminum powder, as well as ready-made mixtures, contains instructions for use and a brief description of the product. If there is no such information, when painting silver you need to adhere to several basic rules:

  • The surface to be painted must be completely free of previous paints;
  • Rust needs to be removed;
  • All defects must be treated with a primer.

The paint is applied in one layer until completely dry (you can use either a brush or a special roller if you need to work with large areas). The first layer, at an average temperature of 24-27 degrees, dries in about a day; if necessary, paint can be applied in several layers.

To speed up the drying process of the coating, you can use household fan heaters. The paint itself has a specific unpleasant odor, so when carrying out interior work, you need to take into account that as it dries, the windows in the room should be open.

The composition, already diluted and dried after use, can be reused, having previously been brought to the desired consistency using Solvent (solvent).

Purpose and description

The above-mentioned primer is used for painting cast iron and steel products, as well as structures on the surface of which rust or scale remains are tightly held. The thickness of corrosion products can reach 70 microns. During operation, painted surfaces may be exposed to the atmosphere, aggressive vapors and gases, as well as salts and chemical reagents, with the only note that their temperature should not exceed 60 ° C.

Primer enamel XB-0278 can act as an independent coating or as a multi-layer coating together with weather-resistant varnishes or enamels. This mixture is used to paint substrates, the cleaning of which at the preparation stage may be difficult for certain reasons. This may include fences, garages or trellises.

The composition is used during car repairs for priming the surfaces of wings and other parts that do not require decorative finishing.

Safety precautions

This composition is not explosive, but it is fire hazardous because one of the components is a solvent. Silver must be stored away from heating devices and fire sources; the container must not be exposed to sunlight. BT-177 should be stored in tightly closed packaging. It is important to paint while wearing personal protective equipment such as a respirator, rubber gloves and goggles. If painting is done indoors, it is important to ensure that the room is well ventilated. Upon completion of work, be sure to ventilate the room.

Aluminum powder, which is part of this paint and varnish material, can cause cancer and various chronic diseases, therefore it is unacceptable for the painted layer to come into contact with food and utensils. Residues of paint must not be buried in the ground, thrown away with household waste, or poured into the sewer system. BT-177 must be removed in accordance with the rules for disposal of construction waste.
