Instructions for use:

  • Preparation. It is necessary to remove dust, dirt, putty or old coatings in the desired area. If necessary, level with primer, putty, and remove minor irregularities with sandpaper or mesh (grout). Wipe the surface with a wet cloth and dry.
  • In order for the coloring material to adhere well, the surface is primed. It is advisable to purchase a primer for graphite paint.
  • You can use masking tape. Shape it into a square, triangle, hexagon and color the middle. The finished coating will be in the shape of a figure.
  • The mixture should be stirred before use. Two or three layers must be applied. After each applied layer, time must pass for drying, only then can the next layer be applied. Use a spray gun instead of a balloon.
  • The temperature of the room in which the painting will take place does not exceed plus 30 degrees Celsius, the humidity is not higher than 80%.

Tip: slate material can dry quickly, so you need to paint surfaces quickly.

  • After the coating is ready, it is necessary for one day to pass, then the surface is considered almost ready; to complete it, it is necessary to rub in calcium carbonate chalk. Excess material is removed with a rag.
  • After rubbing in the chalk, two days pass, the mixture hardens completely and can be used.
  • For a month after coating, the treated surface can only be wiped with a dry cloth; in the second month, it can be washed with soap solutions.

Application Features

The most important rule for working with slate paint is to carefully cover surrounding objects and surfaces before applying. The composition cannot be washed off after hardening; you will have to resort to sanding. Therefore, things, floors, walls, windows, which should not take on the effect of a writing board, must be isolated from the mixture. A cover made of masking tape and special construction film is suitable.

The work itself looks like this step by step:

  1. Primary preparation of the wall (other surface). Remove old wallpaper or paint, apply putty, sand it after it has completely dried.
  2. Padding. Thoroughly wipe the floors and walls from dust, you can vacuum them. Apply primer to the wall. Deep penetration, leveling and adhesive compounds are suitable (if the surface is smooth). Dry.

  3. Application of a magnetic layer (optional). If magnetic paint is used, apply and dry it first. It will take 1-2 coats and wait 24 hours before penciling. If magnetic properties are not needed, proceed straight to slate paint.

  4. Application of slate paint. The composition is applied with a roller or brush in 2-3 layers, drying each layer thoroughly. Wet paint will drag on the tool and you won’t get an even coating. If a magnetic base was applied, fewer layers will be needed - 1-2. Without base - 2-3, depending on the covering ability of a particular brand.

  5. Drying. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and wait the required period before the first use. This way the element will last much longer.

Among painters, there is a life hack for evenly painting corners and borders. First they are passed with a brush, then the main area is treated with a roller.

Benefits of coverage

Name Characteristic
Children's creativity If there are small children in the house, then this is a simple solution to keep them occupied for a couple of hours. By covering a small area of this material, you can allow your child to paint the wall and draw any pictures. Doesn't have to be used in a child's room. Can also be used in the living room, kitchen.
Stylish interior A slate wall is a way to update the interior and make it individual. You can write new slogans daily to transform the room.
Various functions You can not only draw on the finished surface, but also write down recipes if the location is a kitchen. Can be replaced by wallpapering.
Repair material Will help update old furniture: chests of drawers, wardrobes, refrigerator.
Possibilities Replace regular kitchen tiles with a slate surface. It will be much more functional. We must not forget that the paint washes well.

Oil paints

We have already discussed how to make paint thinner or thicker, but we have not yet talked about oil types. They are so popular at least because they are an excellent solution for environments with high humidity.

Making paint is not difficult, nor is making it waterproof. To do this, you will need a simple solvent, to which you will need to add an oil base in equal proportions. Next, according to the same recipe, you need to add a coloring pigment, and the filler itself.

It is by regulating the concentration of the latter that you will control the thickness of your paint - the more filler there is, the thicker the paint will be.

The disadvantages of such paint include the drying time, which can take up to several days, which in some cases can greatly spoil the situation.

Add to this the fact that some compositions of such paint may never harden. In fact, paint is situational, since in some situations its increased plasticity may be necessary.

Pros of coverage

Chalkboard paint serves as a repair material for old boards, such as school boards. The finished surface is wear-resistant. It can be combined with additional components, for example magnetic soil. As a result, the surface will have a magnetic slate effect.

The slate material has good adhesion to wooden boards, plasterboard sheets, and plastered surfaces. This is another plus. It has the worst adhesion to metal and unglazed ceramic surfaces. This is a small minus. If you cover the surface with a special primer, it can be used on plastic, copper, aluminum, and vinyl. Can be tinted in any color.

Peculiarities

Regardless of the type, most people perceive paint as a purchased product, but making it with your own hands at home is not so difficult.
As a rule, such a mixture contains only 2-3 main ingredients that must be included, which can be purchased on the market without any problems. Expensive paints and varnishes from the best brands can show much higher quality due to inclusions of various additives, but for unpretentious use, homemade paint will also work.

It is quite possible that such a material will be somewhat inferior to expensive industrial analogues, say, in terms of durability or the ability to withstand negative external influences, however, for relatively minor repairs in the garage, this option is ideal.

Self-production

Ready-made paints are sold in cans and can be applied using a roller or brush. The second type of packaging is aerosol cans, which can be used to easily and quickly paint. This kind of paint will be expensive. Before use, you need to study the instructions, technology, consumption per m2.

There is a third option for slate paint: make it yourself at home. This slate paint is cheaper in price.

First cooking method

Recipe:

  1. You will need cement - 30g
  2. Acrylic paint – 200g

Mix the two ingredients well.

Purchased paint may contain various additives, such as marble chips. This results in a durable coating applied. You can also add it to a homemade one, since without the additional substance the wall will quickly scratch.

One of the difficult stages is choosing a color from the color range. It is not necessary to use black or brown standard colors (blue, dark blue, and gray colors from Siberia are popular). You can match the color of the wallpaper or tiles. Be sure to respect the proportions.

Second cooking method

Compound:

  • Water – 30 ml
  • Cement or cement-based putty - 30 ml
  • Acrylic varnish with matte effect - 30 ml
  • Colored acrylic paint – 60 ml

Pour cement into a pre-prepared container to create a rough surface. We combine it with paint, which will give the desired color, and the varnish will create plasticity. Stir and add water, stir again until smooth. The finished mixture should be free of lumps. Applying homemade paint consists of the same steps as store-bought paint.

Types of paints

These products first appeared in 1990. Its creator is the famous English designer Annie Sloan. For the first time, he mixed the necessary components, obtaining a solution that has a unique decorative effect. The product came under the brand “Chalk Paint”, which translates as “Chalk”. The dye base is water and additives. Because of the additive present, the type of enamel is determined. The following varieties are distinguished:

  • natural, developed on the basis of resin dyes;
  • mineral, made on the basis of silicate additives;
  • dairy, made from casein;
  • linseed, created on the basis of linseed oil.

Please note: Types of acrylic coatings for wood

It is known that Annie Sloan kept the first recipe for chalk paint a secret. Today, anyone can prepare their own solution. Let's give an example of a basic recipe for creating this dye.

There are several types of chalk paint: natural, mineral, milk and linen.

Features of slate paints

The second name for paint is chalk. The finished surface has a matte, rough effect, which is convenient to write on with a stylus. This coating has a number of characteristics:

  1. Dries quickly
  2. Easy to apply, so beginners can work with it
  3. Easy to wash and clean, any dirt can be easily removed
  4. Matte effect without shine, making writing much more convenient
  5. Good adhesion of material and surface
  6. Long wear resistance, practicality

Paint selection

Go to the largest hardware store nearby, catch the manager and explain the task - you need a universal paint that is suitable for painting wood, plastic and varnished surfaces (such exist).

You can choose the shade right on the spot if you have a rough idea of what you want. Although you can paint furniture with different colors, you will need the help of a specialist to understand what is best for you:

  • Latex paints (they are the easiest to find, many different shades and relatively inexpensive), the downside is that before application you will need to spend time preparing the surface (clean it properly using solvents and sandpaper), which in itself eats up a lot of time.
  • Chalk paints are a real hit in furniture painting; they do not require special preparation, apply well even if you are a neophyte, and mask application flaws and surface unevenness. Most of the pictures you see on Pinterest are painted with these paints, but they are harder to find (although you can buy anything online with delivery). Chalk paint adheres well and spreads out without leaving brush marks.
  • Acrylic paints are the oldest and most proven way to repaint something. They apply well and the brush mark spreads out as the paint dries. But at the same time, they give a slight shine and the effect of “painted wood”, while chalk paints look more organic.

In addition to paint, you'll need brushes, tape to protect areas you don't want to paint, plastic wrap to protect the surrounding interior, sandpaper to prep surfaces, and wax to polish furniture that's already been painted.

Ask the seller if you need to prepare the furniture in any special way - you may need to buy a primer, a base that is applied to the wood before applying the paint of your choice.
