Provence as a stylistic direction

Provence - what is it? This destination is named after the southeastern region of France, Provence. In the 17th century, representatives of the French bourgeoisie increasingly erected buildings in the provinces. They decorated their houses simply but elegantly, using only natural materials and natural color schemes, which is clearly reflected in photographs of the interiors of country houses in the Provence style.

Further, this trend began to spread among writers and artists who used its characteristic features in their works. Its echoes can be found in the paintings of Cezanne, Van Gogh and Matisse, and books by Balzac. By the middle of the 19th century, this genre became widespread in European countries.

Today, the Provence style, thanks to the simplicity, comfort and coziness that it creates, attracts the attention of many people. What Provence style houses should look like

The roof is covered with fired tiles, which are often replaced with a metal counterpart. It can also have small windows.

A minimal amount of material is used for the exterior. The presence of a stone path, a large number of trees and neatly decorated flower beds is required. Window frames consist of small squares

Similar glazing can also be used in the design of kitchen furniture. It looks beautiful when a small buffet or even a cupboard with dishes is installed in the kitchen in combination with a window frame or door leaf.

Important! Provence style does not use bright neon colors.

Lavender and blue shades have a certain significance for style. Lavender color can be used on window shutters, curtains and tablecloths. Blue tones create a feeling of coolness and freshness. They are recommended for use both in the design of room walls and in furniture design.

You can give the room an interesting warm color using mustard, terracotta or lemon yellow. Such shades are used as accent inclusions when decorating room elements. The use of green and olive tones is encouraged, which enhances associations with nature.

All interior elements in the Provence style must fit together flawlessly

The use of pastel shades gives the room softness and naturalness. The colors of ivory, vanilla cream, ash rose, milk, powdery and gray-blue tones will ideally cope with the task. Various color options are presented in the photo of interiors in the Provence style.

Natural materials used to decorate premises must have a rough structure, abrasions, cracks and other visible signs of time. It is necessary that the surface is devoid of gloss and shine.

To add richness to the interior, an abundance of textile elements with floral prints on the surface of the products is used.

Peculiarities

To embody French country, you need to consider the following:

  • Color scheme. The use of delicate and pastel colors is allowed here: lavender, blue, light green, pale yellow, pink, white, milky, beige. These colors act as the main ones when creating a provincial mood. They go well with terracotta and blue shades.

  • Textile. There should be a lot of it in this direction. The windows are decorated with light and translucent curtains with flounces, ruffles, and lace. They are made from chintz, linen, cotton and other natural fabrics. Sofas and beds are covered with bedspreads in pastel colors or with themed patterns of flowers, birds, and animals. The tables are covered with knitted lace tablecloths and napkins, and a medium-length pile rug is laid on the floor. An elegant canopy hangs above the bed.

  • Elegant furniture made of natural wood. It must have an aged appearance. The furniture in this interior is selected in light colors, mostly white or beige. Kitchen sets in blue and green colors are often found in the dining room and kitchen. There should not be a lot of furniture in the premises, and its appearance should show noble origin. The presence of cracks, chips and abrasions is welcome on its surface.

  • Natural finishing materials. The walls are painted in light colors, covered with wallpaper with floral prints, covered with wooden panels, covered with whitewash, and plastered. Parquet, rough boards, and ceramic tiles are laid on the floor. The ceilings are simply painted white.

  • Abundance of daylight and artificial light. In this style, the windows should be large. Often in interiors there is panoramic glazing from floor to ceiling. As for artificial lighting, the Provencal style includes floor lamps with textile lampshades, massive forged chandeliers, and crystal sconces.

  • Variety of decor. It includes: numerous porcelain figurines arranged on open shelves, family photos in frames, wicker baskets, and forged objects.

  • The presence of vegetation in large quantities. Flowers (in pots, dried and in vases) are found everywhere in the room: on windows, shelves and racks, on the floor. Plants are planted not in simple clay pots, but in old teapots, rubber boots, and wooden boxes. In the living room, bedroom, and kitchen there are vases with fresh lavender, poppies, meadow herbs, and roses everywhere. Dry flower arrangements in vases or decorating walls are also welcome.

Characteristic textile pattern and decorative elements in Provence style

To decorate rooms in Provence style, you should use natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and wool. Lace, tablecloths, rugs and rugs with bright floral patterns are welcome. Burlap will look organic in the interior. Canopies, covers, sofa cushions and bed linen with a floral or geometric pattern will help add cheerfulness to the room.

Particular attention is paid to the choice of curtains, which should be light and airy. Products made from cotton, unbleached linen, chintz, organza and chiffon in pastel shades cope with this task. Preference is given to cool colors such as pink, lavender or blue. They can be plain or patterned in the form of floral combinations, checks or stripes.

White and blue in one form or another are always present in the Provence interior

Important! For Provencal style, classic French or Roman curtains are suitable.

The premises should be filled with decorative accessories in the form of antique candlesticks, toys, photo frames, antique-style paintings in Provence style, porcelain figurines, vases, wall decorative plates with floral patterns, open shelves with flowers. The rustic charm is emphasized by hand-made decorative elements. A large round mechanical clock with Roman numerals will look elegant on the wall.

Important! A characteristic element of the decor is a stylized figurine of a rooster, which is a symbol of France.

The textile pattern can be large, small or geometrically correct, the main thing is contrast in combination with the overall style

One of the main elements of the Provence style is lavender, so it is often present in interiors in live or dried form. Flowers can be arranged in vases, placed in flowerpots, hung around the room or placed in a herbarium on the wall.

Provence style kitchen: interior in the spirit of the French province

The kitchen space is perfect for decorating in a rustic style. Here you can experiment with color palette, materials and decor.

The ceiling of the room is finished with wood or materials imitating it. Wooden beams, lining, and wood-look panels look organic, thanks to which you can create the feeling of being in a country house. A whitewashed or light-paneled ceiling would also be appropriate.

Kitchen furniture in the Provence style is usually made of wood and decorated with contrasting elements.

Wood, linoleum, antique tiles, and stone are most often used as flooring. The color scheme can be either light or dark, the main thing is that it blends harmoniously with the surrounding elements.

Helpful advice! You can create the effect of artificial aging of the floor using grout, which is applied to the coating and then partially erased.

The walls of a Provence style kitchen in a wooden house can be decorated with any natural material. Preference is given to brick, stone, light tiles, imitation panels and simple plaster with a fading effect. The selected material should be harmoniously combined with the floor and ceiling, without standing out from the overall color scheme. A kitchen with stone walls and wooden beams on the ceiling looks good. Plastered walls are complemented favorably by panels on the ceiling and tiles on the floor.

A very popular ceiling finishing option is wooden beams with an antique effect.

You can experiment with different options, making the walls dark and the floor light. You can add some color to the room with a colored accent spot. This can be one wall, an apron, a kitchen cabinet, curtains or an entire kitchen set, as is clearly demonstrated by photos of Provence-style kitchen interiors.

Important! There should be one accent spot, and the rest of the space should be in a neutral color.

The right choice of furniture and textiles for Provencal cuisine

Furniture for a Provencal kitchen should be made of natural wood. The best option is products with the effect of an old item. The color of the set is selected in such a way that it contrasts with the decoration of the walls. The room should be filled with Provence style flowers that will give it brightness and life.

Curtains are selected from fabric that is easy to wash. Preference is given to the French or Roman version. If there is already an accent spot in the kitchen, then the products should be light and translucent. If brightness is introduced into the kitchen through curtains, then products with small floral patterns made on a light background are recommended. A discreet cage is allowed.

Helpful advice! To create a harmonious environment, other textile elements in the form of tablecloths or chair covers should be made of the same fabric or in the same tone.

Light furniture combined with large windows creates an atmosphere of lightness and spaciousness.

Textile

Kitchen textiles consist of three main things: curtains and curtains , tablecloths and small details in the form of napkins. For each element of textiles, it is necessary to adhere to certain rules and fundamentals; let’s look at them in more detail.

Textiles must be combined with each other

Tulle curtains

Curtains for the kitchen in the Provence style consist of tulle and curtains. The tulle on the windows should be airy and it is better if you choose a standard white shade. One tulle in the Provence style is not enough. It is necessary to refer to the choice of curtains.

Tulle curtains

Curtains

Provence style curtains for the kitchen are selected according to the chosen structure and material for wall decoration. A cage pattern or a floral pattern looks relevant here. It is better to choose a small pattern - this way the room will look light and sunny.

Floral Curtains

Tablecloth and napkins

It is better to choose a tablecloth and napkins of the same style and model. But sometimes housewives prefer to use napkins as a decorative element, combining them with towels, chair cushions, potholders and other necessary attributes. In this case, the tablecloth is chosen in the same style as the curtains. It is desirable if it is even the same color scheme, but in different shades.

Textiles give the entire kitchen a certain coziness and comfort. The entire atmosphere in the room depends on their choice, so more attention should be paid to this issue.

Tablecloths and napkins must be chosen in the same style

Cozy hallway in Provence style: design ideas

The hallway is the smallest and darkest room in the house. Therefore, it must be finished with light materials. On the walls of the room, the texture of the brickwork will look organic, which can be bleached or coated with light-colored paint, which will add coziness to the room. An unusual and original solution would be to cover the walls with stone, as shown in photos of hallways in the Provence style.

Tile, porcelain stoneware or laminate are suitable as flooring. It is advisable to whitewash the ceiling white, which will make the room more spacious and brighter.

The hallway in Provence style has flooring made of wood or natural stone.

The main element of the Provence style corridor is the entrance doors. They are made of natural wood and complemented by a forged handle. A large mirror bordered with a frame with an antique effect would be useful. The furniture selected is wooden, and there should be a minimum amount of it: it is enough to install a small chest of drawers, a closed cabinet and a mezzanine. It is appropriate to use a sofa or pouf upholstered in cotton, chintz or linen with a small floral pattern. Different furniture options are shown in the photo of the interior of the hallway in the Provence style.

Important! As furniture for the hallway, designed in accordance with this direction, you should not choose modern products in the form of a wardrobe. A vintage, antique-style wardrobe will look more harmonious.

Interior Basics

If you decide to create a kitchen design according to all the rules of the described style, then you must take into account the basics for properly creating the interior. These include:

    It is recommended to make the ceiling in the form of uncovered beams - this way the freshness of the rustic style and air will be felt;

The presented basics should still be followed, since the Provence style is similar to country. If you do not use the services of a designer, then it is likely that when drawing up an interior project yourself, you can make a mistake, which will lead to similar feelings - as a result you will get a country style - a rustic style with Irish notes.

Provence style in the living room interior: subtleties of design

A Provencal-style living room should be filled as much as possible with natural light, which comes through the large windows of the room. The walls are covered with decorative plaster. Careless brickwork painted white is allowed. For flooring, use bleached wood, stone, tiles or parquet.

The whitewashed ceiling can be decorated with wooden beams. Elegant, discreet stucco molding is allowed around the perimeter. The accent element of the room will be a fireplace, which can be located in a corner or near one of the walls. It repeats the shade of the walls or is painted white.

Provencal style is very simple and devoid of too much pretentiousness and pomp.

The leading color for a Provencal living room is white. It can be diluted with emerald, blue, purple, violet, green or yellow shades. You should not be too zealous with cold tones, which should be no more than 30% in the interior. It is better to complement them with warm and cheerful colors: pink, green and yellow.

In order not to make the living room interior vulgar and colorful, you should be careful with the purple color, which should be embodied in no more than three elements, as shown in the photo in the Provencal style of the living room interior. The sunny yellow room looks cheerful and cozy. You can add brightness to light shades with the help of orange, red, beige or brown, which are used in decorative elements, furniture or for finishing the room.

The combination of painted and plain details in the interior gives the Provence style a special charm

A room in the Provence style will look elegant and rich, but at the same time strictly (photos of the interior clearly confirm this) with chocolate inserts contrasting with the white finish. This duet can be complemented with red, yellow and lilac colors.

The furniture is made from natural wood using carved elements. Fabric upholstery of upholstered furniture can be plain or with floral patterns. Quite often, sofa cushions with a pattern are used. The upholstery option should be combined with curtains, carpet on the floor and other textiles - they are made in the same color and with a similar pattern.

Helpful advice! As a rule, the furniture in a Provencal living room is arranged with slight carelessness.

Provence is a style that originated on the coastal strip of southern France, so it often contains marine motifs

The decor of the living room often uses glass or clay floor vases with flowers, porcelain or ceramic figurines placed in different places in the room.

Nuances of each type of finish

When decorating walls in Provence style, you don’t have to choose just one option. You can combine different types of finishes, for example, plaster and wallpaper or tiles and wood. This combination of different materials distinguishes a modern interior. The design of Provence walls should not be flashy; it is only a background for other interior items. Each design option is discussed below.

Painting the walls

When painting walls in a rustic style, give preference to pastel colors found in nature, such as white, terracotta, olive, lavender, blue, beige, ocher. In order to give the room a feeling of lightness and antiquity with the help of walls, the walls are painted deliberately unevenly, with careful negligence. It is worth using several colors and their shades at once. We choose water-based paints that are not harmful to health. Not glossy, with a matte surface.

The walls can be covered with a block house and painted according to your choice

Using a roller we paint the surface with the main tone. It should be two shades darker or lighter than the others for the difference to be noticeable. After the first layer has completely dried, apply the second one using a sponge. Using abrupt movements we make a chaotic pattern in the form of spots. This takes a long time, so you can tie rags with knots to the roller, which will give an uneven pattern. We also apply the third layer after the second has dried. This way, you will get the effect of an aged, peeling or faded wall, but at the same time the paints will be fresh, adhere well and look neat.

Whitewash

This option is the simplest. It will look especially chic on rough walls with slight irregularities. Plastered walls with exposed brick, painted with white lime or water-based emulsion, are a great option for recreating a rough peasant style. Against such a background, both large wooden furniture and thin forged parts look ideal.

Plaster

To create a style, the plaster is applied deliberately roughly so that the brick can be seen through it. Plaster is used textured, coarse or medium grain, to give a textured surface. Such walls seem to bear the imprint of time.

It looks great to decorate the walls in one room with materials of different textures, for example, smooth and rough plaster, tiles and wood paneling. The plaster is painted or whitewashed. It is better to choose colors of beige, gray, ocher tones, these are natural shades of stone.

Brick and stone laying

Brick and stone are widely used in the Provence style. With this material you can completely cover all the walls in the room, or you can select only one. Brick walls painted white provide a backdrop for paintings, mirrors and other decorative details. They refresh the room and fill it with light. At the same time, brick fits perfectly with modern furniture and appliances. Stonework was once made from slate or rubble.

Nowadays, artificial materials reliably imitate real wild stone masonry. Plastic or gypsum panels completely replicate the texture and color of the stone. This is an ideal replacement for expensive natural material. Decorative panels are produced taking into account the style, so when installing them you do not have to be slightly careless. Stone or brickwork with its roughness sets off elegant details made of linen and cotton, forged furniture.
